Prime minister is mum on public thread to active citizens by Maoist news magazine.

REPUBLICA

KATHMANDU, Feb 5: Three civil society members, Kanak Mani Dixit, Kul Chandra Gautam and Subodh Raj Pyakurel, have demanded that Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai make public his view on the cover story published in the latest issue of the Lal Raskshyak, a vernacular monthly of the UCPN (Maoist), which has labeled the trio as "people´s enemies".

Submitting a memorandum to the office of prime minister on Sunday, the three prominent members of the civil society have also demanded action against the magazine and its editor.

They have stated in the memorandum that the cover story is meant to instigate the party cadres against them. "We want to state clearly that the top leaders of the UCPN (Maoist) will be responsible if there is any kind of attack against us because of the instigation, and [the leaders] cannot step aside saying the incident is against the party´s official policy," states the memorandum.

Dixit is the editor of the Himal Southasian, Pyakurel is a human rights activist and Gautuam is former Assistant Secretary-General of the UN.

The three have retiterated that despite such threats, they will not continue to put forward their views.

Stating that they are ready for debate with anyone holding dissenting views, the civil society leaders had said that the threat by the Maoist mouthpiece is an attempt to push the country toward totalitarianism.

While demanding the prime minister´s view and action against the editor of the magazine, Dixit, Pyakurel, and Gautam have also stated that they have put forward the demands as the threats come from the mouthpiece of the prime minister´s own party.

Meanwhile, addressing the parliamentary meeting Sunday, Nepali Congress (NC) chief whip Laxman Prasad Ghimire drew the government´s attention toward the threat issued by the Maoist mouthpiece. "Prime Minister Bhattarai on behalf of the government and Maoist Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal on behalf of the party must make their views public on the issue," he said. Lalrakshyak is edited by Ram Prasad Sapkota, also known as Dipsikha.
