Income of Pashupatinath temple 'ridiculous'

Opposition leaders have termed 'ridiculous' the statement given by the priests of the Pashupatinath temple in Kathmandu as saying that its annual income last year was just Rs 200,000. (less than 3,000 dollars.)

Nepali Congress leader and former minister, Bipin Koirala, termed the reports regarding the annual income by the Pashupatinath temple as 'ridiculous'. The priests at the Pashupatinath temple announced on Saturday that the annual income of the most revered temple in the country stood just at Rs. 200,000.

There is the tradition of making accounts of the temple public on the occasion of 'Bala Chaturdashi.'

"The report regarding the annual income of the temple is just ridiculous. I think over Rs 400,000 must have been collected on Saturday (Balachaturdasi festival) alone," he said.

Recalling a civil society movement that demanded transparency in the income and expenditure of what would be one of the richest temples in the region, Koirala said, "The state should have direct access to manage the millions of rupees that thousands of devotees offer to the temple as donation every year."

Referring to the famous Tirupati Balaji temple of India, former minister Koirala said, "It would have been nice if we could set up institutions like medical colleges, universities or houses for elderly people from the proceeds of the Pashupatinath temple."

Tirupati Balaji, situated in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, is the richest temple in India, with an annual income of over five billion rupees, which is administered by a temple trust that ploughs the bulk of the money back into hundreds of charities.

According to sources at the Pashupati Area Development Trust (PADT), estimated four million devotees from Nepal and abroad (mainly India) visit the temple of Lord Pashupatinath every year and the estimated income of the temple has been billed at Rs 150 million annually.

When contacted by Nepalnews, spokesperson of the PADT , Ram Prasad Dahal, refused to comment on the issue. He further said that he was not aware of the tradition of making public the accounts of the temple on the occasion of Bala Chaturdashi.

The offerings-money, gold, silver and other precious ornaments- go into the hands of the Bhatta and priests. There are four Bhattas, including the chief Bhatta from India, and 108 Bhandaris from Nepal.

The Pashupatinath temple is considered one of the most revered Hindu temples in the region. Hindus believe that to die and to be cremated here will release one from the cycle of repeated birth and death.

Indians hire Nepalis to do their work not only in India but also in the US, UK and other foreign countries.

Not only that......they come to Nepal......get themselves in the most prestigious position in one of the most popular temple of the Hindu Kingdom and take advantage of poor, innocent Nepalese.

I think this it got to end. Nepalese should be the main Pujaris of Pashupati Nath Temple and the income from the offerings should go into Charity and maintanence of the Temple itself.

Jai Shambu! Hara Hara Mahadev! Nepali Haru ko Rakshya Gara.

What happened to the ambitious Pasupati Dev Area plan, khoi kun Chaudhary le initiative leyeko theyo, yeta uta ko Ghar haru bhatkayera, kati nai garne jasto gareka theye, ke hudai cha. In my opinion, we make the Bhattas corrput, we give money to them (MMji, 25,000 re) thinking they will wiresend it to Kailash. We don't bother to ask for any sort of receipt. It should be made compulsory, any donation exceeding 100 Rs, should be entered and the receipt provided, which should work as a parking ticket for the next trip within a month's period. Yestai cha ne, confused le bhanejai, kaslai ke matlab, jasle payo uskai bho ne.

Lau Pasupatinath, afno raschya afai gara

Hehe.. Thanks eone... esp. confused bro.. lekhana maan nabhayeni lekheko ma ..
checkin it first thing in da morning from work.:)
I was curious abt knowing these bhattas', since i rem i had heard long tyam back when I was in Ktm that some of these bhattas' own 5 star hotels, drives in Merc. and wot not.
Esp. this part of the information caught my eye.
"The priests at the Pashupatinath temple announced on Saturday that the annual income of the most revered temple in the country stood just at Rs. 200,000.

There is the tradition of making accounts of the temple public on the occasion of 'Bala Chaturdashi.'

Wouldn't it be really dainty if we could do something like this. I believe Pashupati Nath fund would be one of the biggest public fund that can be used for some good for nepali/human good. I guess true "Dakshina" for Pashupati Nath would be then realised when the money/goods donated in and for the temple would be used in something good.
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.... wishful thinking.....
I guess its about time i should say Jai Pashupati Nath... Khai ta rakchya gareko? :(
Tara feri rakchya garera na ahile samma Nepal cha ki ke ho.. Natraaaaaaaaaaa...nevertheless i just wish administration would be lil more responsible and accounted for.
Wakkaaaaa Dikkaaaaaaaaaa , ( long day ahead ...:s)

he he he he , just merc. and 5 star hotel. Have heard that previous bhatta do have one small scale airline company running in india. lol. BTW the Chaudhary guy or whoever i think it was Tandon who was head of PADT, he was sincere but he was pushed aside by the dirty politics of Mul Bhatta. Mul Bhatta got a baking of Indian interest grp and they force nepali gov during same GPK tenure to forcefully step down. Heard it was that Kanchi Sheer who made this system by negotiation with our king that only south indian bhramin can be priest its not other way around that its gods wish. Its known fact b4 those ppl Bhattas were choosen among Pahadiya Bhramin

Bedrock, you wrote, "Not only that......they come to Nepal......get themselves in the most prestigious position in one of the most popular temple of the Hindu Kingdom and take advantage of poor, innocent Nepalese." They don't take advantage of poor, innocent people, they take advantage of dumb, idiots nepalese. We have been for long time saying, nepalese are innocent, nice, and humble people. In my opinion we just plain stupid, gutless people.

Once I was in Pashupati premises, and I saw a Bhatta coming out of the Temple. All the nepalese hurried to him, and touched his feet like he was a God. How stupid is that? No wonder they fool us, and laugh at us.

Hurray- not just in Nepal, the Bhattas are most likely treated the same way in India also. but the issue here is why are Indians incharge of Nepali temples? People might say that that's what been going on historically and that should be the way forever. I say No to that...times have change and things have to change.

As far as your blame goes saying dumb, idiot...its not because they are doing it knowingly. Lack of proper education is the cause of that. You and I don't do that because we got proper education (i hope). Its something that can't be changed overnight. For Gods sake, what's the history of education in Nepal? One of the most least fortunate people on the face of the earth today are Nepalis along with Afgans, Sudanese, and others.

And MM did u say RS.25000 or was it in paisas.. no offence but even paisas would be too much of dakshina, if one knows it goes to thw rong hands. And 50 gagru dudh re... hmmmmmmmmm what can i say about that... hehe.. anyways... no wonder bhattas and priests thrive of population like these...
Down with those thugs...
