computer geek

(Or "turbo nerd", "turbo geek") One who eats
(computer) bugs for a living. One who fulfils all the
dreariest negative stereotypes about hackers: an asocial,
malodourous, pasty-faced monomaniac with all the personality
of a cheese grater. The term cannot be used by outsiders
without implied insult to all hackers; compare
black-on-black usage of "nigger". A computer geek may be
either a fundamentally clueless individual or a proto-hacker
in larval stage.

GEEKY = Our Living Language Our word geek is now chiefly associated with student and computer slang; one probably thinks first of a computer geek. In origin, however, it is one of the words American English borrowed from the vocabulary of the circus, which was a much more significant source of entertainment in the United States in the 19th and early 20th century than it is now. Large numbers of traveling circuses left a cultural legacy in various and sometimes unexpected ways. For example, Superman and other comic book superheroes owe much of their look to circus acrobats, who were similarly costumed in capes and tights. The circus sideshow is the source of the word geek, ?a performer who engaged in bizarre acts, such as biting the head off a live chicken.? We also owe the word ballyhoo to the circus; its ultimate origin is unknown, but in the late 1800s it referred to a flamboyant free musical performance conducted outside a circus with the goal of luring customers to buy tickets to the inside shows. Other words and expressions with circus origins include bandwagon (coined by P.T. Barnum in 1855) and Siamese twin.

wohoo!!! thanks for the compliment. but i am actually a business/econ major. i just happen to know/guess the correct answers cos i'm generally interested in business and technology (among other things). my cs friends are a lot smarter and would consider themselves hackers/crackers. judging from you nickname, i am guessing you would prefer to be classified as an academic rather than a jock too, unless you are a pundit baje, in which case i should probably stay on your good side in case i need you to perfom some upcoming rites. i must say your borrowed classification of computer geeks is not surprising. while i have come across a few who fit the bill, i have met many computer geeks who have great personalities. also, i generally refrain from stereotyping. some famous self-professed computer geeks: bill gates, steve jobs, larry ellison. be nice to geeks, tho. someday you might end up working for them. anyhow, i am off for this holi party. have a nice weekend.
