White smoke from the chimney... bells are ringing... we have new pope.

May he be a great leader, to all Christians and non-Christians.

And his name is Cardinal Ratzinger of Germany aka Pope Benedict XVI.

It is interesting to note that the future contract on tradesports.com on Cardinal RATZINGER was just 20c prior to the announcement i.e. market was giving him only 20% chance of being the Pope. But his chances rose during the conclave from around 10% to 20%.

Cardinal ARINZE of Nigeria was supposed to be hot but his contract never went above 15c.

Cardinal TETTAMANZI of Italy had the highest contract at 25c trading started on 4/4 but it steadily fell to around 10% at the begining of the conclave and to about 8c today.

On one hand, it looks like Cardinal RATZINGER is a compromise candidate. He is 78 and it is highly unlikely that he is going to have as long tenure as Pope JPII.

On the other hand, Cardinal RATZINGER's election is not suprising in retrospect given his very orthodox interpretation of Catholic doctrine. Whether he addresses the economic issues the way Pope JPII did will have to be seen. And I'd ain't sure about his charisma.

he he

I don't think the election of a new pope is a matter to ridicule. May be it doesn't have any significance for the Nepalese, so what if some one is interested with it? The pontification process was really interesting and knowing how it is performed obviously broadens our knowledge. And this is something that happens once or twice in our life time.

Well, one has all the right to have fun at expense of anyone. That's the beauty of freedom. Ek chhin khyal thatta gardaima ke pharak parchha ra? Hamra Ma-Ha jodi le ra yaha amrika ma tyo john stewart bhanne le pani kaslai baaki rakhya chha ra?

But the papers are saying the new guy is chosen as a "transitional" pope. After all it's not easy stepping into Pope John Paul's shoes ... He had enormous appeal among not only the Catholics but the most of the other faiths in the world.

It would be interesting to see how this new papacy will effect the world.

Hunu ta, hami praaya Nepali haru ko lagi dherai matlab ko kura hoina. Hence, bhancha ni:

- Kaano goru lai aausi na purney
- Lhasa ma sun cha, kaan mero bucchai
- Kaag lai bel pakyo, harsha na bismaat
- baadar ko pucchar, lauro na hattiyaar
..... aadi ittyadi.....

Nonetheless, I do find it interesting to learn more about the papal system, not only because it is the religion of more than a billion people on this planet, but also because it has been playing a pivotal role in our world's history and will continue doing so - more or less - in the future.

And this particular pope is considered quite controversial, in a sense that he is very conservative in his views. Take for instance, we know from his past behaviour, he is:

- anti abortion
- anti stem cell research
- anti contraceptive usage
- anti homosexuality
- anti gay marriage
- anti idea of allowing women into priesthood (Jesus was a man, therefore)
- anti progressive views of accepting other religious perspectives
- anti idea of allowing priests to enter matrimony
etc. etc. ... much to the consternation of us who have liberal or even moderate leanings when it comes to organized religion.

Therefore, shall I say in tongue-in-cheek manner, it will be interesting to see how Pope Benedict XVI influences our world.
