Does UK really need gurkhas? I welcome anyone who has served, has family serving, or is knowledgeable to speak out about the arrangement between Nepal and UK to provide soldiers for UK's international fights. Won't they be better utilized elsewhere, such as in UN peacekeeping operations, or even closer to home? What do you say? Shall Nepal stop supplying their young men? What say you? Note: I'm not saying disband them, I'm just wondering if there is enough cause/support to stop sending them to UK anymore. Thanks for your input!

To sacrifice one's life for the sake of someone else, some other country, and that too just for the money, that never appealed to me.

I disagree with hurray. You could look at it in a different way. They are working hard to make a decent living, just like you and me.

I agree Orientalgal. It is just another sad price the citizens of a poor country have to pay.

Bring them home? Nepal earns much needed foreign exchange; not to mention remitance that those gurkhas send back home. At least it can change few thousands lives in Nepal. They are just doing their job; and trying to earn a decent living. If only we were not a third world country...... IndisGuise:(

Sure bring them home but can you guarantee them employment of equal or greater value? Can Nepali govt. or any nepali organization employ them?? How the hell is UN going to employ them in what capacity? I don't think U.N. is exactly in dearth of peacekeepers. If you have answers to these questions, sure bring them home...otherwise leave them alone. Let people make an honest living. It's their choice. It's none of our business.

exactly, Hell 100's of thousand nepalese are working in arab countries for a fraction of Gurkhas. Do you wonder why some of my classmates were dreaming about becoming British Laaure since 7th grade??? British army is thrilling for those who need action as well as for those who need Mucho Dinero...
