does anybody has any idea about the information regarding h-4 visa? can he/she be able to go to school while in h-4 status? or he/she needs to get their status changed to f1? i would appreciate if somebody in this room suggets me. thanks!!

I am on an H4 visa and taking classes full time. No I don't think you need to change your visa status. An appointment with a college counselor might help more.

as far as i understand, s/he can go to school but can't have assistantships/scholarships. will have to pay the tuition.

thanks for your suggestion and to others too for your help! so, guzmoon, but you have to have TOEFL score to get to the school right? and were u be able to go to school right away u came from nepal? and how difficult is it to process and get the visa for h-4? since, i am in my OPT and going back to nepal after my OPT expires, i am taking all my h1-b docs with me, do you think it would be little bit difficult because of my OPT status? sorry for lots of Qs. but, i would appreciate for your help.

Yes, your H4 can go to school full time or part time, but can't have on-campus employment/ assitantships. However, he/she might be eligible for some scholarships. If H4 changes status to F1, then he/she can work on-campus as well.

As long as you have H1B status valid and proper documents, you shouldn't have any problem to return the US. As H4, anyone can start school since the day he/she arrive in the US. I suggest you one thing. Have your spouse (H4) start as non-traditional student (taking classes without formal admission) if she's undergraduate student. That way you may avoid TOEFL.

Some of the merit based scholarship should have no concern with your visa status. Check with your international student advisor/ or admissions office whoever decides scholarships. It might be different in different schools. I don't know how your school decides in your situation.

there is no pain in taking TOEFL. It's good idea. But what i was saying is... you can start as non-traditional student for a couple of semester, and when you apply for admission later, they mayn't ask TOEFL because your simply did well in those courses. So why do they need TOEFL for?
