United Nations, April 6 (PTI): Expressing concern over the Nepal Government's ban on protests in the country, UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan has said that security considerations should not be the basis for denying citizens the right to peaceful protest.

Over 200 persons had been arrested for participating in rallies and night curfew enforced in Kathmandu and Lalitpur districts yesterday.

The ban was imposed on the eve of demonstrations against King Gyanendra's rule by the seven-party political alliance.

In a statement on Wednesday, Annan said he is troubled by the developing confrontation and the large number of arrests of the government's opponents, noting that virtually all avenues for peaceful protests "seem" to be closing.

Referring to Communist Party of Nepal's (Maoist) recent announcement that it has suspended military activity in Kathmandu valley, Annan urged the Maoists to take further steps to fulfill the commitments they had made publicly.

He also appealed to all sides in Nepal to work towards ending the conflict through a reciprocal ceasefire agreement

There is a chance that this series of protest will eventually bring the democracy back.

I understand that in the age of globalization where the politics of one country affects another, we cannot ignore the inevitable influence of an outside force to shape up our country's internal policies or politics. However, it is high time in Nepal for nepalese to present themselves as the major force to such change in our political spectrum rather than relying on outside force every single time. The more we rely for someone else to clean up our mess, the more venerable we become, thus turning our country into a political playground. So I suggest all Nepalese to be cautious when relying on outside help to form our own government, and to remember to use such force merely as a catalyst.

Over 90 demonstrators arrested in Pokhara and Dhangadhi

Police have taken into custody over 90 peaceful demonstrators from Pokhara and Dhangadhi on Monday while they were protesting what they call the government’s attempt to suppress nationwide pro-democracy movement.

Professionals including school and university teachers defied curfew orders in the western town of Pokhara and demonstrated at Palikhe chowk, near Mahendra Pul against the alleged atrocities committed by the security personnel. Those taken into custody include university teachers Krishna Adhikari, Gorakhraj Ojha, Sabita Baidhya and Dr. Krishna KC.

Meanwhile, hundreds of opposition activists continue to defy curfew orders in Pokhara. They have also clashed with police. The local administration has imposed 11-hour long curfew in the beautiful tourist town during the day on Monday.

In the far-western town of Dhangadhi, police intervened and took 37 people into custody as they were carrying out a peaceful demonstration calling for restoration of peace and democracy. Over 50 people were injured during the clashes that was sparked due to police intervention. Seriously injured activists, Narayan Dutta Bhatta of the Nepali Congress (Democratic) and Lachhi Ram Acharya of Akhil (United) have been taken to Lakhimpur of India for treatment.

Some half a dozen policemen were also injured during the clashes. nepalnews.com by Apr 10 06
