Goths, Suicidal Tendencies & Superstar DJs

An eight year study of the sub-culture lifestyles of over a thousand
young Brits published this week, has revealed that 47% of the Goths have
attempted suicide and 53% practised self harm, making the youth fashion
by far the most self-destructive sub-cultures.

"Although only fairly small numbers of young people identify themselves
as belonging to the Goth subculture, rates of self-harm and attempted
suicide are very high among this group," said Glasgow University chief
researcher Robert Young.

"Young people with a tendency to self-harm are attracted to the Goth
subculture," he added (bbc/ British Medical Journal).

The much maligned movement first emerged in the early 80s and appealed
to more than a few of dance culture's most interesting characters
including Danny Howells, Sven Vath and Dave Clarke, who covered Bauhaus'
seminal gothic anthem She's In Parties on his recent artist album Devil's
Advocate.

"I loved the way Bauhaus was Gothy-cool, not over Goth," Dave told
Skrufff a couple of years ago, "I was very into that," he added.

Ivan Smagghe also confessed to a passing interest in the genre when
chatting to Skrufff about his 2004 compilation Death Disco, which prompted
now deceased dance magazine Jockey Slut to brand his band Black Strobe
'electrogoths'.

"My partner (Arnaud Robotini) in Black Strobe was a Goth, I was more
into New Wave," the French star producer recalled, "Goth was quite funny,
a bit silly at times and I reacted to all that by being different."

Just last week Seb Fontaine admitted a sneaking admiration for the
scene, telling UK mag One Week To Live 'sometimes when I see Goths hanging
round Camden, I've got so much respect for them.'

"And this is something I probably wouldn't have admitted to ten years
ago, but just the fact that they are something . . . they are someone, I
quite like that," he confessed.

The suicide study also added that punk has a similar link with
self-harm, though not as strong as for Goth.

Discredited DEA Ecstasy Doc Targeted By Animal Rights Activists

Animal rights organisation PETA have singled out notorious ecstasy
scientist George Ricaurte in their latest list of medical institutions
killing animals cruelly, specifically over his terminally flawed
experiments with ecstasy.

"Money and animal lives were wasted in 2003 when Johns Hopkins
experimenter George Ricaurte injected squirrel monkeys and baboons with what he
thought was Ecstasy but turned out to be "speed," leading to horrible
deaths for the primates," said PETA in a press release issued this week.
"Despite this deadly mistake, Ricaurte continues to receive millions of
dollars in public money for his drug abuse studies on primates."

During his tests, two of the animals died quickly and all the surviving
animals suffered 65% drops in dopamine levels, the Washington Post
reported at the time, prompting Ricaurte to conclude that ecstasy users
risked brain damage and Parkinson's Disease from just one night of using
MDMA. His claims were widely circulated and euphorically endorsed by
America's DEA, and directly influenced a debate in Congress on ecstasy,
said the Post.

"Johns Hopkins officials have turned an institution of higher learning
into an animal Abu Ghraib," said PETA President Ingrid E. Newkirk.
"These people are wasting lives and money and are badly in need of a
refresher course in ethics and the humane treatment of animals."

Italian Pot Smokers' Half-Gram Jail Threat

Silvio Berlusconi's far right government succeeded in introducing
draconian anti drug laws last week, just days before being voted out of
office by a wafer thin majority.

The harsh new laws mean users caught with miniscule amounts of any drug
will face losing their driving licences and passports, whilst people
found with more than the thresholds face between six and 20 years in
jail. Trafficking penalties kick in at 0.5grams for cannabis (though based
on THC levels), cocaine at 0.75 grams and ecstasy at 0.75g (5 or so
pills).

"Up until today there's been total arbitrariness and it can happen that
a drug addict can be convicted or not only on the basis of the judge's
discretion, setting aside the type of quantity of the drug," Italian
minister Carlo Giovanardi said in a statement about the new rules, " We
want the law to step in because the traffickers of death must be
beaten," he added.

The new penalties were devised by 'post-fascist' politician Gianfranco
Fini, said DRC.net, who announced his plans in 2003 soon after his
leader Berlusconi sparked outrage for defending Italy's wartime dictator
Benito Mussolini (he told the Spectator magazine "Mussolini never killed
anyone . . . Mussolini sent people on holiday to confine them." (The

More recently the now deposed Italian PM said fascism wasn't as bad as
Nazism or Communism and defended a seig Heil style straight-arm salute
by Italian footballer Paulo di Canio at a soccer match in Rome.

Speed Affects Men 'Three Times More Than Women'

A US study on how much dopamine amphetamines produce has revealed that
men's brain's produce three times as much as women, prompting
scientists to suggest that the link could explain why men use more drugs.

"This plays into the alpha male stereotype," Drugscope chief Harry
Shapiro told the Guardian.

"It's possible this explains that men respond better to something that
makes them feel strong and powerful."

The scientists' findings emerged just two months after another US study
revealed that women are six times more sensitive to loud noises,
according to a report in Esquire Magazine. Researchers in the study examined
correlations between noisy areas and heart attacks and discovered that
men experiencing 'prolonged exposure to noise in the 65-75 decibel
range- just louder than conversation- were 50% more like to have an attack.
Women spending time in the same circumstances were discovered to be
300% more at risk.

In more battle of the sexes news, Scotland's Sunday Herald published an
illuminating report on London's latest clubbing craze, naked clubbing
at new biweekly club Starkers! In London Bridge.

Full nudity (apart from shoes and socks) is compulsory, the Scottish
newspaper revealed, though women at the pan-sexual all-sorts-welcome
night 'are, inevitably, outnumbered by the men.'

Men Act Like Monkeys As Donkeys Out-Do Women

A new study on infidelity has revealed that men become more jealous of
'alpha males' when their girlfriends are at their most fertile,
mirroring mating behaviour amongst chimpanzees, the Telegraph reported this
week.

Liverpool University biological science expert Rob Burriss said females
favour high testosterone square jawed faces when fertile, and big-eyed
feminine types for long term relationships.

"Men become more wary of masculine-looking men only when the female's
facial preferences begin to shift prior to ovulation," he suggested,
"Face shape and structure are good indicators of dominance."

Meanwhile in India, feminists launched a protest over textbooks in
Rajastan, which compare women to donkeys in the new curriculum.

explains. "In fact, the donkey is a shade better, for while the housewife may

launched a renewed morality drive against 'Bad Islamic Behaviour' this
week, cracking down on men with long hair and those wearing Western style T
