Hi sajha users,
I don't know how many of your have been trhough this terrible incident but here, its me and a couple of other fellow nepalese who came back from Nepal to US via the Delhi-Chicago route.
The customs at Delhi airport take out the luggage you have checked-in in Kathmandu for Chicago and ask you to identify them. Then they look for reasons to ask for money. They asked for 100 dollars (in US currency) from me and won't give my passport back until I paid them. One of my friends who just recently came to US, was asked to get off the AA plane she had already boarded along with 31 other nepalese. The flight was delayed by 2 hours.
I don't understand why these Indians are so cheap behave that way to Nepalese. I don't know if they do that to everybody or just Nepalese.
The hatred I had for Indians is getting stronger due to such activities. I guess the Delhi airport authority knows whats going on and are a part of the whole incident.

I had the same experience at the Delhi Airport during this dashainm, not while I was going to the Nepal, but when i was flying back to US. They made me open my entire suitcase to see the gifts that I brought. I didn't get hassled much while giong to airport but just had to pay $28.00 for extra suitcase, which I had already paid in US airport. I didn't wanna go throught questions and answers as to why I had to pay $28.00 since I was already tired of that long 15 hours direct flight.

I would not want to fly through Delhi if it wasn't for $600.00 savings (me and my wife). I'd still take that route to save $600.00. But if $300 per person is not a whole lot then DO NOT GO THROUGH DELHI...

Here's is the trick guys- DO NOT CHECK YOUR LUGGAGE ALL THE WAY TO CHICAGO OR ANY US CITY DIRECTLY FROM KTM-- do it to delhi, so they dont know you are going to the US--once you have checked your luggage out thru customs (which you have to do anyway), then you will go to the AA or whichever airline counter your flight is on and check it back in. I have done it twice this past year and had no problems each time. I am sorry to hear my nep brothers hassled by these raa.. ko bans, but hopefully this will help future travellers.

You all should file complaint to the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu. Mention your flight number ftom KTM to Delhi, Delhi to???, day/date, detail of the incident, and if you know the name of the official, mention that too. Better yet, why not to write letter to the editor of Rising Nepal or any local KTM newspaper? This will warn other travellers flying abroad thru Delhi. You have nothing to loose by speaking up. if the Embassy took action, we all win..

ya writing in newspaper will attrach the wide public attentation and Indian officials in nepal will be horrified with the news reaction on this.

Make it a wide issue and it will get the real attetation. This has been on going trends.

I suggest not rising Nepal for this. Go for Kantipur daily. In speical case, they may reach Indian embassy as well to interview the respective indian officials.

Good Luck.

it was my second trip to nepal through delhi in less than a year. last time was in dasain.
i checked my luggage in kathmandu. though i was flying from sahara to delhi and by continental to newark they checked in my suitcases to liberty. i had to identify my baggage at delhi. the air sahara ground staff escorted me to transit lounge and asked me to wait for continental staff. i hat almost three hours transit there. the continental staff appeared on time asked me to identify the suitcases he did all the foralities of customs. i ahd alot of gifts.... gundruk, masyaura, sinki even kagati ko chuk, lapsi ko achar. i did not had any problem at all. i just enjoyed talking to couple of lahures who have been working in in a gold mine as a security personnel somewhere in a african country.
yes, later one indian guy came and told me that he is from security and asked me some stupid questions like why i was going to states.but he told me that whatever he was asking me was in the interest of american security. and being very polite he told me that if i dont want i can refuse to answer.
in toto, i did not had any problem. only thing that i did not like was the subway at the igi, i cant eat 'em.

Hay guys, I have had the similar experience once, The bloody Indian staffs were harassing me for me to bribe them, I am very hot tempered guy when someone get into my nerves, and that day these Fu(king Indians really got into my nerves, I had to act cool coz you never know what charge they will arrest you with if you start making trouble.
But I denied paying them any money, not even a single penny. Then they took few of my thinks, like home made achaar, and things that my mother had made it for me, and took even my walkman saying that it was not allowed in the flight.
I realized there was no point on discussing with those cheap Fu(kers, so I went direct to the phone and call the number that we should call in case of staff asking for bribe, they had put up that sign every where, I don’t know if it still is there.. and I complained to 3 different people, and spoke to few European passengers who were near about it as well and they actually helped me as well. And finally I got all my things back.

Since then I never fly through India. And I hate Indians big time.
When I meet Indian in Nepal and they speak Hindi to me, then I answer him back in Nepali, then he tries to speak in English because he does not understand Nepali. Then even I don’t give a sh|t, I still answer him back in Nepali.

If he is a tourist in Nepal, then he should speak in English like all the other tourist, or speak in Nepali. And if that Indian lives in Nepal then I tell him Learn Nepali Di(k Head.
Nepal is not India.

Actually, I wrote about the incident on BBC's "have your say" column and am waiting for them to accept it for publication. I really doubt they will do that though since it can become an international issue.
I think writing a letter to the editor of some Nepali daily is a could idea, I will do that.

junkyketo : You should file complaint to the Indian Embasy too! Send by a registered mail to the embassy (cultural section??). You will be pleasantly surprised when you get a response from them. I think the embasy staffs are courteous enough to respond to your letter. Few years back, one Nepalese student on the way to Delhi was seized of his Japanese/Chinese stuffs by Indian Officers while he was travelling by a train. He filed complaint at the embassy. He was surprised he not only got the response from the embassy, but they also tracked down his seized items. Those goods were seized in the middle of nowhere while he was in a train on the way to Delhi. He got his items back after paying some administration fees! (Indian officers argued no foreigners are allowed to bring third country items without paying taxes!)

So it does not hurt to tell the embassy what you went through at Delhi Airport!

True Story:

New Delhi Airport Authority looted Gold and goods from Nepalese in 1988. What happen was .... British Gurkhas Army Chatter flight had to do emergency landing in Delhi Airport because of aircraft technical difficulty.

when British Gurkha people get off from plane and stay on transit... Indian airport authority seized all their golds, money and goods. They told that was un-authorized in New Delhi.

But these Nepalese gurkha did hard work years and years and earn that wealth and they were returned to home. when they got to kathmandu airport, these Nepales gurkha had only one suite case and empty hand for nothing.

Hi folks it is not with only Nepalese people but it is happening with the Indian people too and that too in there own country, Delhi. I have so many Indian friends here in NY with whom I work with. They have complained me so many times, the act that takes place at Delhi Airport while going for a visit and while coming back. They do rip off them asking so many questions and checking luggage and yes $$. Mostly while going from NY. They did complain so many times here in Indian embassy. They just show their concern about it, rest is history. My all-Indian friends who are well educated and are working with good well known US Company they always complain about their government and their administration. Nobody is happy the way Airport staff treats him or her. They have stopped taking anything that gets their eye into. I don’t think there is nothing to do with common people and we should not hate common people, as they too are the victims of the system. We should not judge common people just because some crap staffs act devil. After all we all common people are victims of the corrupt system whether it is in India, Nepal or in Pakistan….SA …we all common people are in the same boat… facing same problem. It will be wise to not to blame common people and to harass them just because some stupid corrupt people plays the game to harass us. Cheers and peace!

I think Nepalese people always have issues with indians.. I guess the smaller poorer country always think the bigger guys are after them... just the same way canadians feel about americans.. Its nothing like that... India is a third world and in third world countries, every one harasses everyone.. and everyone tries to rip off everyone.. Why do we nepalese always feel they are after us...
Nepalese harrass nepalese at the Nepal airport... did you forget that... everyone wants your money!!!!

We feel Indians are after us because “They are after us” you just need the knowledge and sight to see it and understand it. Big countries always want to control small and weak countries. Like in a family, older feels they have the control and must keep control of the youngest.

I have never been harassed in Nepali airport.
But:
Yes Nepalese harass Nepalese in Nepali airport; but they still are Nepali.
It is also a fact that when you come to Nepal from aboard all the relatives and friends that you never knew existed show up to see what you have got them.

Difference between Indian harassing a Nepali and Nepali harassing Nepali is the same as your relatives coming and asking you for something against your neighbour coming and asking you for the same thing. Who would you rather give? your relatives of course.
