Hello everyone,

I am a new user in Sajha. I have been reading all kinds of threads here and some of them really provoked me to think about my country.

I started this thread to have some serious discussions on "Reasons for Nepal being a failed state and what can we do about it". I hate to use the term "failed state" but its a reality. Anyways there are some new hopes with the recent developments...

I just want to know what do today's elite Nepali youths think about this. Please fell free to post any other relevant messages.

I am not starting this to directly blame anyone. Therefore please think carefully before posting anything. Besides I do not want just yellings at the King, Political leaders or the maoists from you. Please post something substantial.....

This might seem a boring topic for most of us. But I am positive that it will ignite a few thoughts in at least some.

YuvA !!!

Here is what I think needs to be done:

First of all The Republic of Nepal is a must and the president should be the head of the state (eg. the US) and not the prime minister (eg. India). Looking at the previous elections it is possible that no single party can get all the votes for a majority. In this case there are always chances for a hung parliament and more fights and more elections. The president can be elected for 4 or 5 years as per the new constitution. The new constitution should provide people the freedom to pursue their own interest and freedom to make money and the freedom to live the way they want as long as their freedom is not hurting other people's freedom.

People who work hard and make money in a legal way should not be harrashed by anyone including the government in the form of higher taxes. Beauracrats should be appointed for the life or their retirement age. For example when the Congress came into power they brought their people and transferred or fired the existing beauracrats. Later on when the UML came into power they brought their people and fired Congress people. Beauracrats have to pass a standarized test where they would be tested on their abilities to manage.

Atleast for the next 20-30 years the government should have quotas for people/ethnic groups that have not been as priviliged as the rest of the people. This quota system should be based on income than on ethnicity. This should bring lots of people that have been supressed to the mainstream.

Government should eliminate protectionism and encourage free trade. By 2050 India and China will be two of the biggest markets in the world. The trade between them will suprass the trade currently between the US and Japan which is only second to the US and Canada. If we can act as a medium and facalitate trade between them we can make a lot of money and upgrade the living standard for all Nepalis. In order to do so we need to build infrastructure to link India and China.

Government's job should be to serve people and not rule people so the government should be small and efficient. It is necessary to privatize every government agency. Foreign investment should be encouraged and they should be allowed to own 100% of a company if they want to do so. When they want to take their money we should not create any problems either.

There are many more things that can and should be done but the most important thing right now is order and security. Once there is order and security everything will be possible. More later.

The new president should have the right to choose any person from the general public to be included in the cabinet. The person does not necessarily have to be a member of the parliament. This makes sense because most of the MPS have been in politics for such a long time that they do not even undestand the basics of economics or foreign policy. MPs' job is to be a watch-dog and make sure the president is doing what was promised to the people. MPs' can go to their constituents and let the president or the cabinet know what the people need in their area.

Instead of trying to do everything on our own we should focus on our strengths and do it really good so that we can compete with the world. If we can have a surplus production on the things that we can do really good, we can trade it for other goods. For example, currently our strength lies in tourism and hydro-electricity. We should try our best to make the most of these two undeveloped industries. We can always earn foreign currencies with tourism and if done the right way we can have surplus production of hydro-electricity that can be traded for other goods with India or China. We are situated at such a perfect place that we don't even need to trade with any other countries as long as we can make the most of the trade with India and China.

Whats more appealing is that these old dupes dont feel the need to say that theyre old and worn out and a new generation of politicians and policy makers need to step in.

Old is gold, but if you cant move with times, you're nothing but a big wide fat load of poop for the country.

I like the idea of a president actually. Lets make the Royal family a normal family, lets put Gyanendra and his douche bags behind bars!

This is probably one of the sensible threads here and nobody wants to contribute. That tells a lot about ourselves.

Hi everyone,

Thanks to those who shared their ideas. I know that being a concerned Nepali noone can ignore this situation of our country at the moment. There are many of us who think about it everyday and many more who wish things were better.

Anyways, I personally think that this has also got to do with our cultures, traditions and the social structure. By saying "culture and traditions", I mean those practices in our society which do not seem to be contagious but are the root cause of many problems.

1.the hierarchial structure of our government offices where a good relation with a senior officer is a must. it is more important than their job.

2.the feeling that there is nothing that can be done. what can I alone achieve when noone else seems to care. this is because we had many bad experiences in the past.

3.the higher level education system of our country which is highly politicized. i know there are many students who do not think pelting stones or burning tyres would do any good. but daily protest by students against trivial matters have been a daily routine. i acknowledge the fact that they are resentful due to the poor leadership. but many of them do not come to protest because of genuiene reasons.

4.we hate our political leaders. but how can every political leader be bad? so instead of saying all of them are corrupt, i believe that even if many of them want to do good they do not have the potential. so i say we have incapable leaders instead of saying bad leaders (incapabe imply bad to some extent). it is not an easy task to lead a country as diverse as Nepal where people are uneducated and their leaders can always use them to their advantage. (the present terai unrest)

5.in a way there is a feudalistic model everywhere in our societies. the King was the head of state and had enourmous power(i still believe that the King has enormous influence in the political scenario even if his constitutional status is almost that of a common citizen). then there is a King in every gvt offices (i am not trying to say that every gvt officer is as bad as the king). then there is a King in every family (the father or in other words our male dominated society which still mostly functions on a belief that women are supposed to stay at home and work in the kitchen which automatically renders almost half the population unproductive in a way)

I belive that people are dumb in every country. So it depends upon the leaders to show them the way. afterall the leaders wouldn't be called leaders unless they could make everyone else follow them. (common people make their decisions on what everyone else is saying and they act more on their emotions then their intelluctual abilities. it was the same people who hailed the king when he took power. the same people revolted against him to overthrow him. Same in the then Nazi Germany/Iraq).

These are some of my not-so-mature thoughts. But i think they make some sense at least to me. I have nothing personal against anyone and am not trying to portray a certain group/organization as being inherently bad/wrong. I hope you people can also see something here if not find the clues that are missing/do not make sense.

Please feel free to drop a few words !

YuvA
