Disclaimer: Strictly in jest - not meaning to ridicule !

There are plenty of episides and events in Mahabharat - the holy piece, which sound inconvincing and sometimes laughable - in jest. Thanks to B.R. Chopra and his production team, for reconstructing the bible of hinduisim and bringing it as what later turned out to be one of the mega shows in the history of indian television. Personally speaking, if it wasn't for his wise decision to make a grand TV series out ot the mythology, I wouldn't know many fine details of wide gamuts of events and stories that the piece actually has.

Lately, in an informal talk with an indian friend of mine, I came to know that Mahabharat was written by rishi Ved Vyas in somewhat biased ways and the antagonists with the likes of Duryodhan and Dushashan have been characterised deliberately with more negative shades than they actually possessed. Even with their names, enough tweakings were done to show that they were really bad else their real names were Suryodhan, meaning brave (?), and Sushashan meaning good rule/ruler. I did not know that. Just felt like mentioning. Please correct me, if I am wrong.

My father read Mahabharat many times before seeing it in the television. His favorite character used to be Karna. I was very curious to see this character and know more about the person who influenced my father so much. Sadly, Chopra's Mahabharat did not projected Karna's character to full fairness and it failed to make any kind of good impression on MY mind at least. I do not know whether it will change, if I read the book to get to know more about him.

Now coming to the funny episodes, the first thing that comes to my mind is Dhritarastra and his wife Gandhari having 100 sons and a daughter. hahaha...I mean okay people of that time used to live longer (?) so it may be possible to have a team of kids, but c'mon, 101 children? Isn't it just one too many? Didn't they get tired or what? Oh well, may be they did not use to have family plans in those days, but still...it's a crime-IMO!!!

On top of that, Dhritarashtra was blind and Gandhari had put a cloth piece over her eyes to show her commitment for her husband which is certainly laudable. I wonder how many kids they would have ended up with, if both could see each other! :P

One school of thought behind having that many children is even more interesting. If you remember, Dhritarashtra was the eldest son but he was blind and therefore had to step out from becoming the king. His younger brother Pandu took over. This built up as a sheer frustration for the ambitious Dhritarashtra. He wanted to give birth to his son before Pandu to make sure his son rule, but missed that chance as well by a whisker.

Pandu's son, Yudhisthir came to the earth before Duryodhan, his son.

This devasted Dhritarastra even more so he went with this mission to give birth to as many children as possible. It was not by choice or pleasure but by sheer anger...:P

More episodes coming later. Please add on, if you have any.

Loote: You should ask your father or read Mahabharat yourself to find out how Dhritrastra got 100 sons! Although, I do not remember in detail, one thing I can tell you is that they were not born "each year" .. that would take over 100 years for all. They were all born by what modern medicine may say as "Artificial insemination" or "Test Tube babies". All 100 were born almost in the same time, Duryodhan being the first!

I heard something like this about the birth of Gandhari’s hundred sons and daughters -When astrologers predicted Gandhari was going to give birth to a son who would be a undefeatable evil power , then somebody ( byadhya baaje ?! ) cut the embryo in hundred pieces inside the womb by magic.. ..like modern days radiosurgery hehehe . And they thought the work’s done !
But, those hundred pieces implanted again and the result was she bore hundred babies including Duryodhan …Dushasan …...

LOL ke ke imagine garera lekheko holaa Byaas baaje le :D

as i know, 100 children were from splitting of same embryo...thru test tube baby or stem cells techniques .....but if they all are from same embryo then y didn't they look alike atleast in most of the character. anyways..that was at least a concept of high tech that now a days scientist tries for research...

ha ha ha.. thats a hilarious point Birbhadra... most of the epics and stories has assuption in some extend depending on how 'crazy' the writer is.. here, in Mahabharat's case, hrishi Vyas is clearver enough to boggle most of the reader's mind..

LooTeKuKuR I completely agree with you, Watching the whole episode of Mahabharata again last year, I saw so many weak points and bull sh*ts.

Your point on 101 children is one of the big hoaxes I think. Just imagine to give birth to one child it takes one year, and gandhari was; what; let us just say 15 at that time of period when she got married. She must have been 116 years old when she gave birth to 101 kids, and duryodhan was already mentioning about his 100 brothers in the middle of the episode. If we say Gandhari gave birth to twins then she would be finished after 50 years, and 4 at one time still be 25 years. But come on 2 kids every year or 4 kids every year that is hardly possible.
She must have been a factory; if they had said that Dhritastra had 10 or 20 wires then it would be possible to say that he had 101 sons. But that many children from one woman is impossible.

Another funny thing is birth of Lord Krishna, it is said that Kansa heard a divine voice from haven that his 8th nephew will kill him. It is also said that Krishna came to earth for get rid of such a monstrous ruler. Why did the divine voice (God’s voice) warned Kansa, when he loved his sister so much and was wishing her best wishes and Devki was about to have such a good life. God themselves interfered in Devki’s life, and killed 6 innocent children’s. I don’t see Kansa as villain in this part. He was even thinking of not harming the other kids then the 8th one. I see some conspiracy going on from gods them self.

And there are many more, not only in Mahabharata but also in Ramayana. Some story just does not make sense. It may be because the people who made the film were too stupid to present it in such a way that made sense.

Also if Kansa wanted to kill the 8th nephew, why did he put Devki and her husband in the same prison cell? He could have kept them separate so that there was no question of getting pregnant in the first place!

Aba illogical fairytales haruma pabi bibad ?

They are for enjoyment and moral lessons which were very appropriate for ancient times. If you try to scientifically analyze fairytales what do you think you will get?

Birbhadra you're comparing apples to oranges. Harry potter is not a religious book that's supposed to teach you how to lead a good life. Mahabharat is a holy book and any holes in the story needs to be examined further. All hindus take this book as the source of guidance. It is a very important book as far as Hinduism is concerned. Any oddities in the story should be investigated. Perhaps it could simply be error in the stories came from inaccurately passing down the story through the ages.
