MJF leader threatens to declare Terai a state

Himalayan News Service
Itahari, February 7:

Central vice-chairman of the agitating Madhesi Janaadhikar Forum, Kishor Bishwas, today threatened to declare the Terai a separate state if the government fails to immediately solve the Terai’s problem through talks.
Bishwas said so at a condolence meet held in honour of Hari Mehta and Shyam Sunar Mehta, who were killed in Inaruwa of Sunsari district in police firing last Thursday.
“We will declare a separate state with an independent constitution if we fail to receive our rights through the movement,” Bishwas said. Stressing that 24 persons have
already been “martyred” until now, he warned
that the Madhesi movement will change into a disintegration campaign if the suppression goes on unabated.
He also claimed that the government is thinking of mobilising the army to suppress their movement and warned that any such move would be met with armed struggle by the Madhesis. “We too will take up arms for securing our rights if the army is mobilised. We are prepared for this,” he said.
Bishwas expressed dissatisfaction, saying the present government sees Madhes as only a colony. “We will not kowtow to colonial rule,” he said. He laid emphasis on including a federal state system and a proportionate electoral system in the interim constitution.

Demos in Terai continue

Himalayan News Service
Siraha, February 7:

The agitating Terai outfits staged demonstrations in different parts of Siraha district today as well. Activists of the Madhesi Janaadhikar Forum (MJF) and Janamorcha Nepal staged separate demonstrations in Lahan.
Addressing a meeting, central chairman of Janamorcha-affiliated Revolutionary Madhesi Morcha (RMM), Ram Rijhan Yadav, said: “The eight parties should reach a consensus to solve the Terai unrest at the earliest. The large parties should change their outdated mentality, too.”
A rickshaw rally was staged under the leadership of Siraha secretary of the Nepali Congress-Democratic Upendra Yadav. Demonstrators staged a rally carrying an effigy of the PM.
Meanwhile, MJF central member Chandreshwor Yadav warned that the country would be “divided into two if the Nepali Army or other security wings are mobilised” to suppress the ongoing Madhesi movement. Issuing a statement, Yadav said: “No force can stop Nepal from getting divided into two parts if the government mobilises the army or security forces to suppress the peaceful movement launched by the MJF.”
Meanwhile, Abdulla Rain, Siraha president of the NC-D-affiliated NSU, resigned from his post and the party, saying that the government was not taking the demands of the Madhesis seriously.

India's economy is expected to grow by 9.2% in the current financial year, according to the Indian government.
The country's robust manufacturing and services sectors are forecast to drive growth at the fastest rate in 18 years.

The government's official growth estimate for the financial year ending in March exceeds the central bank's own forecast of between 8.5% and 9%.

Last week, India revised up economic growth for the previous financial year to 9% from 8.4%.

The country's stock market jumped to a record high above 14,570 points on the back of the latest figures for the 2006/07 period.

"This shows that growth is more sustainable this time around," said DK Joshi, a senior economist with rating agency Crisil.

"It is backed by very high investment rate, as well as good consumption and export demand."

Farming worries

Indian manufacturing output was expected to grow by 11.3%, compared with 9.1% a year ago, the central statistics office reported.

The key services sector was set to expand by 11.2%, compared with 9.8% in the previous financial year.

However, farming - which accounts for a fifth of India's gross domestic product and employs about 60% of the population - was expected to grow by just 2.7%.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has said that India's farming output must increase by up to 4% to ensure Asia's fourth-biggest economy expands annually by between 7% and 8% over the coming years.
