thought I would share this recent discovery in medical science. quite a milestone of a kind, no? seems like finally some respite for sterile men :P. the technique is still in rudimentary phase and be advised not to take this as a discovery all set for practice, right away! however, if successful, this technique could offer hope for men suffering from infertility. but ethical debates on the threat to the natural process of procreation could slow down the process further.

Scientists say they have successfully made immature sperm cells from human bone marrow samples.

If these can be grown into fully developed sperm, which the researchers hope to do within five years, they may be useful in fertility treatments.

But experts have warned the findings from the German study should be interpreted with caution at this very early stage.

And proposed new laws would ban their use in fertility treatments in the UK.

How sperm is made from bone marrow tissue

The government's recent fertility White Paper proposes a ban on using artificially created sperm or eggs in assisted reproduction.

The researchers from the Universities of Göttingen and Münster and the Medical School of Hannover isolated adult stem cells - cells that have the ability to become many types of tissue in the body - from bone marrow samples taken from male volunteers.

Spermatagonial cells

Normally these stem cells from the bone marrow would develop into the different cell types in muscle tissue.

But the researchers induced a small number of them to develop into what appeared to be spermatagonial cells - cells found in the testes which would normally develop into mature sperm cells.

This is the first time human spermatagonial cells have been made artificially in this way.

And lead researcher Professor Karim Nayernia, now at the North-east England Stem Cell Institute based at the Centre for Life in Newcastle upon Tyne, said he hopes his investigations will mean he might one day be able to treat young men rendered infertile by chemotherapy.

He said: "We're very excited about this discovery.

"Our next goal is to see if we can get the spermatagonial cells to progress to mature sperm in the laboratory and this should take around three to five years of experiments."

He acknowledged that the law may be a stumbling block.

Professor Harry Moore of the Centre for Stem Cell Biology at the University of Sheffield said: "This finding is of interest but we really need to be very cautious about the interpretation."

The changing of stem cell types observed by the researchers, from pre-muscle to pre-reproductive cells, is known as trans-differentiation.

Caution needed

And Professor Moore said nearly all similar observations of trans-differentiation in adult stem cells had not been confirmed when tested rigorously, as the results could be misleading.

He said: "This is a fast moving field but we are still many years away from developing any therapies for infertility using such techniques."

And he warned that manipulating stem cells to develop into mature sperm could cause permanent genetic changes in the sperm, making the cells unsafe to use in fertility treatments.

However, Dr Allan Pacey, secretary of the British Fertility Society, said: "This kind of work will be very useful in helping us understand the biology of how sperm are made.

"That in itself may provide some insight into why things sometimes go wrong and may lead to new approaches to treating male infertility."

The findings were presented at an international fertility conference and are published in Gamete Biology: Emerging Frontiers on Fertility and Contraceptive Development.

Few words of caution

The researchers turned adult stem cells from bone marrow into immature sperm cells. They're excited about the discovery, but say that it could take three to five years to develop a process whereby the cells develop into the more mature sperm cells found in the testes.

"This finding is of interest but we really need to be very cautious about the interpretation," a leading biologist tells BBC News.

No one seems to have shared that word of caution with the headline writers on Fleet Street. Here's how the story's being covered by the British press:

• Daily Mail: "A transplant technique has been devised that could effectively remove men from the process of creating life."

• Daily Telegraph: "Women could one day grow their own sperm, says a scientist who today claims to have turned bone marrow into early-stage sperm cells."

• The Independent: "Women might soon be able to produce sperm in a development that could allow lesbian couples to have their own biological daughters, according to a pioneering study published today."

so this means, technically, women can also create sperms and give birth to their own babies WITHOUT any help from men!!!

BUT

they will only be able to produce daughters coz they will still need Y chromosome - that only resides in men's chromosomes - to produce a boy child.

this is what i remember from my biology class :P

XX=======>Female chromosome
XY=======>Male chromosome

after copulation, male's either X or Y chromosome mixes with female's X (only) chromosome to give birth to a new life. if male's X meets with female's X, the result is a daughter and if male's Y meets with female's X the result is son.

The prospect of all-female conception

Women might soon be able to produce sperm in a development that could allow lesbian couples to have their own biological daughters, according to a pioneering study published today.

Scientists are seeking ethical permission to produce synthetic sperm cells from a woman's bone marrow tissue after showing that it possible to produce rudimentary sperm cells from male bone-marrow tissue.

The researchers said they had already produced early sperm cells from bone-marrow tissue taken from men. They believe the findings show that it may be possible to restore fertility to men who cannot naturally produce their own sperm.

But the results also raise the prospect of being able to take bone-marrow tissue from women and coaxing the stem cells within the female tissue to develop into sperm cells, said Professor Karim Nayernia of the University of Newcastle upon Tyne.

Creating sperm from women would mean they would only be able to produce daughters because the Y chromosome of male sperm would still be needed to produce sons. The latest research brings the prospect of female-only conception a step closer.

"Theoretically is it possible," Professor Nayernia said. "The problem is whether the sperm cells are functional or not. I don't think there is an ethical barrier, so long as it's safe. We are in the process of applying for ethical approval. We are preparing now to apply to use the existing bone marrow stem cell bank here in Newcastle. We need permission from the patient who supplied the bone marrow, the ethics committee and the hospital itself."

If sperm cells can be developed from female bone-marrow tissue they will be matured in the laboratory and tested for their ability to penetrate the outer "shell" of a hamster's egg - a standard fertility test for sperm.

"We want to test the functionality of any male and female sperm that is made by this way," Professor Nayernia said. But he said there was no intention at this stage to produce female sperm that would be used to fertilise a human egg, a move that would require the approval of the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority.

The immediate aim is to see if female bone marrow can be lured into developing into the stem cells that can make sperm cells. The ultimate aim is to discover if these secondary stem cells can then be made into other useful tissues of the body, he said.

The latest findings, published in the journal Reproduction: Gamete Biology, show that male bone marrow can be used to make the early "spermatagonial" stem cells that normally mature into fully developed sperm cells.

"Our next goal is to see if we can get the spermatagonial stem cells to progress to mature sperm in the laboratory and this should take around three to five years of experiments," Professor Nayernia said.

Last year, Professor Nayernia led scientists at the University of Gottingen in Germany who became the first to produce viable artificial sperm from mouse embryonic stem cells, which were used to produce seven live offspring.

His latest work on stem cells derived from human bone marrow suggests that it could be possible to develop the techniques to help men who cannot produce their own sperm naturally.

"We're very excited about this discovery, particularly as our earlier work in mice suggests that we could develop this work even further," Professor Nayernia said.

Whether the scientists will ever be able to develop the techniques to help real patients - male or female - will depend on future legislation that the Government is preparing as a replacement to the existing Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act.

A White Paper on genetics suggested that artificial gametes produced from the ordinary "somatic" tissue of the body may be banned from being used to fertilise human eggs by in vitro fertilisation.

***theoretically would be a better word than technically.

hey Loots,
Did you hear the latest census reports in newbirths in US ? They are seriously lacking males to the females ratio. Guess this technology is going to come in handy when it reaches that 1male-10female ratio. he he They won't be needin' males and their luagge to have a baby now(I mean even today they can goto sperm banks but has to be someone's sperm). I am waiting for them Designer babies. YUh k'now like an Ugaro baby or a Yves Saint Laurent baby or an all American Ralph Laurent baby. Just like adopting African babies is the Fad now. ha ha h a

hahahahahaha......BC
yah american lauren babies for sale ---holiday discount upto 30% LOL!

seriously, that's where the ethical issues come handy...i guess any technology enhancement can have dark shades if exploited. what if MJ wants to have his own baby from his bone marrow sperm only to molest later on. hahaha....think this idea should be restricted to make father out of a needy sterile man only. we don't want women producing their own babies soley by themselves, do we? what's the use of us men? :P

one thing for sure, this technique certainly would make a loud voice in the senate and elsewhere, once it's ready for operation.

Just wait till you hear them Right wingers... he he he
Man they won't be able to take it hearing they are not not needed in procreation anymo. I would love to hear what the likes of Jerry Falwels and Pat Robertsons have to say abou this. ha ha ha Just imagine the Ladis tellin them they don't need their right wing god fearing weiner any more ... ha ha ha

hahaha..falwell, i know what's he's gonna say: "producing babies from artificial sperms is against the norms of the war against terrorism and bible clause no: nada nada"....hahahaha...

poor jerry, could not decipher the mystery behind the 9/11 attack and went on to bash and blame gay and lesbian communities for that hahahaha...what a joke he made out of himself back then and that pat was his parrot LOL!

They should start making test tube babies and start selling them in the super market. Imagine BABY STORE at a mall where you can buy custom fertilized babies. You have the option of opting for XXX as father and YYY as mother depending on availability or you can introduce your own sperms or eggs into the customization.

Saves women the troubles of going through pregnancy and labor. What a world we live in.. so coooool.
