Couples should stop cuddling and kissing near a revered square surrounded by palaces and temples in Nepal's capital because it shows a lack of respect for religion, a committee warned Thursday.

"The environment around this ancient religious site has been desecrated by these young Romeos and Juliets," Rajan Maharjan, a supervisor from the Kathmandu Durbar Square Conservation Programme Committee told AFP.

Durbar Square, a UNESCO world heritage site and popular destination for thousands of foreign backpackers to spend the day, has a series of Hindu and Buddhist shrines that date back to the sixteenth century.

But the square, which is home to a young girl revered as a living goddess and was the seat of Nepal's kings until the 1960s, has also become a popular spot for lovebirds to gather in the evening.

"Lovers kissing and cuddling while sheltering in the temples has become a common site, so we have posted notices telling people to stop," said Maharajan, adding that little notice has been paid to the signs.

"We put the notices up on Tuesday and the same day, they were ripped down but we plan to take pictures of the couples and publish them to try and make them stop," he said.

Nepal, where about 80 percent of the 27 million population are Hindu, is extremely socially conservative, and public displays of affection between couples are viewed as culturally unacceptable.

Playing electrical Russian roulette

Not everybody in military-ruled Myanmar is cursing the blackouts.
Thieves in the former Burma's main city, Yangon, are taking advantage of outages often lasting for more than 20 hours a day to steal the copper power cables, police said on Friday.
Sometimes, of course, they get unlucky.
"The thieves are risking their lives as it is impossible to know exactly when the power is going to be restored. It's just like playing Russian roulette," said one Yangon police officer who did not want to be named.
"I've seen a few cases in which thieves were electrocuted. In April, a 16-year-old boy was found dead, holding a broken cable from a lamppost. Only God knows for sure whether he was a thief or not."
Innocent passers-by are also falling victim.
"In one case, the broken cable end left by the thief dangled into a puddle and a woman jogger was killed when she stepped into it," he said.
Four decades of military rule and economic mismanagement have turned Myanmar -- the world's number one rice exporter when it won independence from Britain in 1948 -- into one of Asia's biggest basket cases.
Despite huge off-shore natural gas reserves, the southeast Asian nation's 53 million people have access to less than 10 percent of the electricity per capita of neighboring Thailand.

No Sex Please We're Brummies

A new sex survey of over 20,000 Brits revealed this week that over 60%
regularly sleep with their partners out of obligation rather than
desire, with high earners and highly educated people the most likely to
please their lovers rather than themselves.

The survey for dating portal makefriendsonline.com said redheads are
the most likely hair colour to sleep with someone out of obligation,
however, 'obligation is least effective in Wolverhampton," the survey said,
"Where 66% of people will say no if they're not in the mood."

The survey's findings make grim reading for Midlanders who this week
were also forced to deal with the ignominy of learning that organisers of
this year's Miss Great Britain beauty pageant selected a Birmingham
contestant from Stoke-On-Trent after failing to find any girls pretty
enough from England's second city.

"We were desperately looking for a Miss GB entrant from Birmingham," a
Miss GB spokesperson told the BBC, "but in truth, there was no-one
suitable who entered." 18 year old Stoke student Sophie Wilson represented
the city, on the grounds that an ex boyfriend once lived there.

In more sex-related news, Serbia's top plastic surgeon Srecko
Djordjevic revealed that scores of local farmers have been funding penis
extension operations by trading cows, with the price on an operation- £400-
matching the worth of a cow.

"The size of a man's member seems to play a big role in our society,"
Dr Djordjevic told local press agency Sina, "Some of them want to add 10
centimetres but that is just not possible - at least not for just one
cow," he added. (Ananova).

Ex-'Grey's' star cites racism for firing

"Grey's Anatomy" star Isaiah Washington said racism was a factor in his firing from the hit ABC series after he twice used an anti-gay slur.

Washington, who initially used the epithet during an onset clash with a co-star, told Newsweek magazine that "someone heard the booming voice of a black man and got really scared and that was the beginning of the end for me."

He tried to make amends by expressing remorse and volunteering to enter a counseling program to understand how the confrontation got out of hand, he told Newsweek.

"My mistake was believing that I would get the support from my network and all of my cast mates across the board. My mistake was believing I could correct a wrong with honesty and sincerity," he said in the interview posted online Thursday.

"My mistake was thinking black people get second chances. I was wrong on all fronts," he said.

His unwillingness to act like a submissive black at work was part of the problem, Washington said.

"Well, it didn't help me on the set that I was a black man who wasn't a mush-mouth Negro walking around with his head in his hands all the time. I didn't speak like I'd just left the plantation and that can be a problem for people sometime," he said.

"I had a person in human resources tell me after this thing played out that `some people' were afraid of me around the studio. I asked her why, because I'm a 6-foot-1, black man with dark skin and who doesn't go around saying `Yessah, massa sir' and `No sir, massa' to everyone?

"It's nuts when your presence alone can just scare people, and that made me a prime candidate to take the heat in a dysfunctional family," he said.

ABC declined comment Thursday. In its one public statement regarding Washington, issued in January, the network said his actions were "unacceptable."

Washington, who used the slur against co-star T.R. Knight during a confrontation with Patrick Dempsey, repeated the word backstage at the Golden Globes in January in denying the first incident. A public apology to Knight and others followed.
