Guys,
I have a masters degree in computer science from a US University, and my grades are decent. I have an experience in the Java/J2EE field for about 2-3 years ( US experience + Nepal), and I have a full time job at a reputed company now.

I have a few questions to ask:

1. I don't want to be a academician or professor, but I am very interested in doing PHD in computer science. Is PHD in Computer Science worth it, provided that I don't want to be into teaching?

2. What are some of the top Universities which are easy to get access to , and which provides scholarships and assistantships?

3. What are the good areas in computer science for Masters? I dont want to be doing PHD in Algorithms or AI. I am more interested in Software Engg and Distributed Computting. Any Universities in those areas?

A master obviously worth. You may start right away.

You must think once again about what exactly you want to do after you get a PhD. A PhD is not a sole extension of the technical skills in programming or in a classwork project. Because you will have to put a substantial research effort before you graduate, it worths only if you continue pushing your research skill in the direction of new innovations and knowledge. Though the scope will be narrower, you may find yourself comfortable in the areas like usability, software design, and human computer interaction once you get a PhD in computer science, even if you do not want to be in academia. However, if you do want to continue core programming and similar project managements, a PhD may turn out to be a waste of a significant amount of time and effort of your life.

But, what is the wrong with teaching, research, scholarship and service. Would not you be tired with the monotony of try and catch inside a unconditional while loop ever in your life?

When it comes to the research area and universities, top are always top. MIT, CalTech, UCs, all should be good. You may also want to look for University of Wisconsin, Madison, University of Washington, Seattle and University of Illinois, UC.

What I also recommend are the programs in Human Computer Interaction including the programs at Carnie Melon and Iowa State University.

RAs/TAs are always there, for good grade and good GRE. Also required is a set of good recommendations.

You do not necessarily have to stick with academia after you complete PHD. For instace you can have your own office and provide consultancy. The hardest part is getting admission. In my experience, first you have to decide on topic or the other way to find is find some university website and look under faculties. Find out what kind of research they are doing if you are interest in any, sent them email you are interested. If you have published any paper in MS that will significantly help you. I believe you are interested in Software Engg and Distributed Computting, find out in any university if faculties are doing research on particular topic. It would be good idea to write research proposal as well on topic. Normally PHD is free and you get some assistantship as well. Any way good luck
