The bedbug and flea scare of Jackson Height prevented me to go and enjoy the movie. So I am very curious about viewers’ ratings of the movie.

Particularly, if they found it how the following review describes it.

http://www.nepalitimes.com/issue/382/Review/14366

Despite all praise for the technical quality of the movie, I sensed a weird and brazen story in it and I really could not excite myself to go watch it.

I sure believe in supporting Nepali things, particularly Nepali arts. However, I believe a critical view of them rather than a ritualistic patronization helps them more in a long run.

In any case, Kagbeni deserves congratulations for already getting high rating from home.

But I still long for a quality Nepali movie with Nepal specific elements, at least until I can count some. Then we can go for universal, marginal or weird topics.

Nepe

As per my post somewhere:

Adapted from the Monkey's Paw (the 2nd half was exactly that except instead of using the moors in Northern England, the setting is Kagbeni and the Jomsom area).  Reminded me of the play that was performed in the house concert every other year at school.  Apart from that, movie was acted well (actors are all professional theatre performers in Ktm).  Highlight of the movie: The love scene, that did make all around the hall twitch a lil...Was uncalled for, but justice was done considering that the conservative Nepali film industry is still in its infant stages (superglued to that same caliber for the past 20 years or so).  Beside the 2 main roles, Mohammed Hanif has done a terrific job...Never knew that the bugger could act except for the occasional roles back in the days during the school concerts.  Awesome!!

BTW, the psychological udus and upiya bites were prevalent throughout the movie...Once again, it was just a psychological thing.  Who knows, maybe since there already was another hindi movie screened before Kagbeni was, the udus and upiya were already full.  LMFAO

Technical: GOOD. It was good enough -- far better than previous Nepali movies, but nothing muchto brag about vis-a-vis the global movie stream. Subtitles were too small, and the audio (blame it on the quality of the Eagle Theater) was poor. Many parts of the movie were too dark.

Plot: EXCELLENT! As Samsara mentioned, it was a Nepali adaptation of "The Monkey's Paw". Those who worked on it seemed to have done a superb job of infusing Nepali flavor to the old English story.

Acting: EXCELLENT! Unlike in the previous Nepali movies, it sure was not "over-acted". Natural and smooth.

Presentation/editing: VERY GOOD in the second half, but POOR in the first. This (the first half) is the only part that I found the most capable of being criticized. It was too slow and dragging. I can only suppose that the movie makers tried too hard to romanticize the scenic beauty of Kagbeni. NOT being a documentary on the place, those (lenghthy) scenes were totally uncalled for. I think they should have just focused on the story line, and edited the unnecessary parts out. The 2-hour movie could have easily been a 1 1/2-hour show, with a much more powerful and efficient presentation.

Overall: "A+" in comparison to previous Nepali movies; "B-" otherwise. The only other Nepali movie that "Kagbeni" could be compared well with: "Karma" by Tsering Rhitar. "Caravan", to me, doesn't count because it was produced/directed by a foreigner.
