Nebraska Service Center  ==>  NSC Student/Schools Updates - 02/14/08

NSC Student/Schools Updates - 02/14/08

Acceptable names on checks and money orders

As long as the checks are not written to a different Federal Agency, like the U.S. Treasury or Department of State the contractor will accept checks. It is acceptable if the names are short like USCIS or DHS.
NSC will accept checks when there is a variation to the agency name. and also will accept checks when there is a nongovernmental address listed as C/O, ATTN or other similar notation, so long as the center is listed before the nongovernmental institution (i.e. USCIS attn: University of Nebraska).

Receipt numbers written on the backs of checks

The receipt number on the back of the check is the only way to check and confirm LIN# to enquire about the case with the Service Center. Hence students and exchange visitors who are not receiving receipt and approval notice should make sure that their address is a valid and current address when they give in their application.

OPT application and receipting delays

In a case where an application for OPT is received by NSC on the last date of the student's program of study and due to receipting or processing delays is not "officially" receipted until after the program end date NSC will go by the date the I-765 was received at NSC. The receipt date may be a later date in this case.

Receipting backlog

NSC currently has no receipting backlog.

I-20 page 3 signature and standard operating procedure regarding submission of all I-20's

Regarding signature on page 3 of the I-20 there is no new standard operating procedure. The OPT is recommended and endorsed when the DSO signs the page 3. A signature of the DSO is needed not only for the students travel purposes as the phrase on the bottom states MAY BE used for travel.

With respect to standard operating procedure during submission of all I-20's NSC only needs all previously issued I-20's when the student has had previous employment whether it's on the campus or off, full time or part time. All previously issued I-20's that reflect the prior employment is required. Previous I-20 will not be required if the student has had no curricular practical training or employment.

Lost I-94 and replacement

A confirmation will be made that the applicant has entered the United States in F-1 status for students who have lost their I-94 and need to apply for post-completion OPT. On the other hand, if a student has already submitted I-102 for replacement I-194 the officer can verify that the applicant has an approved I-102 through a system check.

Receipt notices

For receipt notices all applications are receipted within I-2 days of being received at NSC. NSC is now working on student 765s that were received during mid December.

Expedite OPT applications when requested

As long as the request is for bona fide legitimate reason and this reason is identified in the file the center (NSC) is still able to expedite OPT applications when requested. These files can be highlighted boldly with "EXPEDITED REQUEST" and also may include any documentation for the request.
