Your International student office should have all the information. This is my understanding:

your ISO officer will issue a new I-20 with OPT information and this info will also be fed into SEVIS system then after that you fill out the extension form and include all the info asked along with the fees. mail it to your USCIS location

make sure you do this before your current OPT expires!

if you have filed for H1 and OPT expires before oct 1st, you don't have to do anything it is automatically extended until october 1st. However keep in mind that if H1 gets denied you won't be able to get that 17 month extension. so plan ahead.

My opt expired on May 31st, and i don't know when i will know that whether i get selected in lottery or not.

Hi Birbhadra, Thanks for the information but I already know that but my question is if anybody have applied for an extention or got an extention. When I talk to my DSO they say they still need to decide on the regulations about OPT which is confusing and frustrating for me.

If your OPT hasn't expired don't worry. If it is expiring soon go hound th DSO. Yedi timro OPT expire bhai sakya chaina bhane mero anuman anusar june/ july tira hudaicha hola haina? In that case you have plenty of time. As long as you file before it expires, you are automatically granted extension if you are STEM major maintaining your status.

My OPT expires in July and I qualify for all the OPT extention criterias and my company has also applied for H1B.

So, I shouldnt be worrying about anything right?

 

I am MBA with major in Management Information System. My DSO is ready to request for OPT extension with CIP Code 11.0503(Business System Analyst). Will it be fine for eligibility ???

yes you don't have to do anything that is my understanding but please double check with your DSO. Also, since you applied for H1 if you don't get approved you will not get 17 month extension. Hope you get yours approved.

If that falls under STEM (business sys anlyst) then go for it. USCIS will have to accept whatever the DSO says.

I didnt see anywhere that I will be in trouble if my H1 is not approved. I can still go ahead and extend my OPT. I ama not sure about that. Where did you learn that if h1b didnt get approvedthen you cannot get the 17 month extension?

Please remember that your OPT shouldn't get expired on the day you are filing for Extension. So just wait till u get lottery result. If u get selected then forget abt it otherwise move forward for extension process.

Note: We need to get lottery result before our OPT expire so that we can make our plan accordingly.

i got an email from ISO. I am not sure if that applies to NON-STEM students only or to anybody applying H1.

Please make sure with your DSO. In your case I would suggest that you just wait, I am sure you 'll know about your H1 approval before your OPT expires, right? Then in case H1 is not approved, you can apply for extension i suppose.
