I don't know about others but I knew the dress code in Nepal. In school, I had my prescribed uniform to wear. While working in the government office (former HMG/N), we had our described uniform. We all know what to wear in the parties, funeral and other occasions. They can't let you in with out their defined dress code, even in the fked up disco clubs like Babylone, Moonsun and so on. Don't even talk about Casinos, they are pretty strict about it. We didn't know that much about dress code but we knew basic, ain't we?

unknown guy, IMV the individuals outfit in the picture are representative of the constituents they represent, (same may not be said of their will and integrity)..

In all honesty, I want my CA member to look like me, maybe in kachhad and bhoto, not in a crisp daura suruwal just for photo op. There is no shame in being who you are. And you must understand that they DO NOT KNOW the dress code thing. They did not go to expensive schools like you did. They did not join Police, Army or were in any proper profession where they might have had that dress code experience or knowledge. They were either fighting a guerilla war (and you would not like to see them in their fighting outfit), working in rural Nepal, lucky to have a new set of clothes in Dashain, or just being a hustler in Ktm, where the prevalent colour for pants is ash colour, to go with chappals.

All the other social/cultural dress codes are just that - social and cultural. And individual being in a society, being in a culture, know that, because it is what they have seen and what they have been fed. Hence all red for behay and Teej, white in barakhi, etc.. But Daura suruwal is neither cultural nor social. Show me ONE sub-section of Nepali that wears daura suruwal as part of their socio-cultural identity.

My grandfather wears daura suruwal because that is what he grew up with, what he wore to work, and that is what he has, and what he feels comfortable with. And why did he wear daura surual - when he was a kid, it was a school uniform (actually bhoto and suruwal), and government decreed uniform for govt. offices when he started working... at retirement that is all he has, in addition to a few loongis.

You hardly see men in kilts in Scottish parliament, or in Kimono's in Tokyo markets....

first of all, "they didt goto expensive school like i did"...

FYo, I went to a public school in a second town in Nepal and went to public college for 2 years..

second, when you are an MP...dont forget you are an Mp... thats where all your excuses vanises..

third, to be an MP, meaning a lawmaker, it comes with liablities of being an important rolemaker of the parliment and if they they dont understand what does that mean...they should just stay away from it...

dude, i respect ur opinion but please show me some logic here bud...have you ever seen an American senator or Italian Mp wearing Armani or gucci or prada?

give us a  a break sir

I'd say when in doubt,  wear formal.

Gotta be fair here,
Let's start from the left-most one in the picture. Let's call him MP1 and subsequently increment each MP by 1.

MP1: The baseball cap is quite out of place. Looks like he needs a hair-trim above the ears.

MP2 is aight.

MP3 needs traditional shirt and pants and needs to tuck the shirt in.

MP4 is dressed for success even after the election. That's fantastic!

MP5 and MP6 look formal in their saris.

MP7 needs to replace the jeans and sports shoes with formal pants and shiny dress shoes. He has the most room for improvements perhaps.

MP8: It would be great if he would wear traditional shirt and pants but at least he urgently needs proper shoes to cover conceal toes. It's a health hazard at the workplace.

MP9 looks pretty formal which is cool.

This is just a dress code oddity. Branding them a-hole is kinda harsh. At the end of the day, no one is really hurt with whatever they are wearing. In the mean time, the parliament needs to come up with guidelines for acceptable outfits.

Peace :)

The eccentric Indian painter, MF Hussain is well-known for his dislike of shoes...Without a surprise, he always attended the Rajya Sabha meeting with no shoes on.  Now why on earth are we complaining of these Nepali MPs who are atleast wearing something on their feet?

Our Nepalese folks will dress in a suit and tie for birthday parties and wedding parties (rather than for their jobs as netas).  Just shows how much regard they have for their profession...Hell, even lowly Pimps dress better (although it may be a Pink suit)!!

2 suggestions for MP8 - Either change your dress and wear atleast like one of those MPs (MP1 - MP9 including saris) Or get ready to go back to India.

Axara bro,

FYI, maoist leaders got their own uniform and that's what most of em' wear. It looks nice on em'. It's gray in color.

They are CA members who are going make the constitution of new Nepal and they can't even dress properly. I bet you, most em' can afford proper dress. If not, they get money from government for clothing allowence. I don't like none of this MOFO, but still they all are representing us.

Guys, Gandhi must've given some of the British politicians heart-attacks when he appeared in his dhoti at the Parliament. Churchill used to call him a "half-naked fakir". Do we judge Gandhi based on how he used to dress up?

Having said that, we must also not forget that Gandhi was making a statement with his dress - wearing only Indian clothes. So, as long as our MPs don't show up in jeans, sneakers or flipflops and as long as they wear national dress or the dress that represents their ethnicity, that should be okay.
