Hidden Jewel of New York City: 5 Pointz

Sitting on the cusp of Queens and overlooking the Manhattan skyline, 5 Pointz is perfectly situated to greet people going to Manhattan or coming to Queens on the 7 Train. From the train it might look like just buildings covered in art, but when you take a stroll through the block and around the buildings, you’re greeted with some of the best art work and designs you will ever see.

5 Pointz does not enjoy the same attention as Times Square or the Brooklyn Bridge but that is the beauty of it. When you actually discover 5 Pointz you feel that you found something very exclusive in the city. I consider 5 Pointz a jewel of New York City and on any given day, you will find tourists, photographers, music artists, graffiti artists and people like me who are fascinated with graffiti art.

5 Pointz’s website states that the name 5 Pointz signifies the five boroughs of New York City coming together as one. The website also states that it has a reputation of being the epicenter of the graffiti scene and it has united aerosol artists from across the world. The gallery curator is Jonathan Cohen and his goal is “to convert the five-story, block-long industrial complex at Jackson Avenue and Davis Street, formerly the Phun Phactory, into a graffiti art museum.”

One day I took my camera and headed for 5 Pointz from Jackson Heights and got on the 7 train to Court Square. I took a few pictures from the train station and then walked a block from the station to get to 5 Pointz. Everytime I come here, it feels like the first time because there is always new art covering the walls. I just love coming here. I am amazed how talented these artists are and how passionate they are of “tagging” the walls. (For the artists out there, you can paint with a permit from 12-7 on weekends and by appointments on weekdays).

There are more than 350 murals at 5 Pointz and if you want to properly satisfy your admiration the whole tour can take about 2-3 hours. So the next time you’re up for some adventure and have some time on your hands, take the 7 train and get off on Court Square to 5 Pointz. You will definitely be amazed and your New York experience would not be the same.

P.S. Don’t forget to bring a camera with you!
