News from Nepal Courtesy Musa Samachar

Yet another dawn arrives in Kathmandu valley, yet another day to fulfill the daily obligations of excreting, scrubbing, bathing, travelling to work, yet another scheduled traffic jam at the Bagmati bridge, yet another clogged set of organs breathing in the suffocating air. Just as you begin to resign to the dreary and mundane reality of your existence, Kathmandu offers its dose of the theatre of the absurd in the form of the most ridiculous piece of news and absolutely makes life worthwhile.

If you haven’t already heard about the flying Nepali mouse, then let me just explain the context. Passengers were shocked to find Chi Chi (and I am fervent in my belief that a mouse with a celebrity status such as his deserves a name, and a diva name at that) travelling with them on a Nepal Airlines carrier bound to Bangkok. The flight got cancelled, a “team” was sent out to deal with the “issue” and it was discovered that Chi Chi had actually built a nest in a catering box.

Now, you may think that safety and hygiene are priority issues in this incident, but in our egalitarian Naya Nepal, to uproot an underprivileged, marginalized and perhaps minor individual from their home could have serious political ramifications. If Chi Chi had made the effort to build a dulo within the cabin, then he really must not have been kidding about the whole venture. This is serious business.

But, it is also not. And I’ve really enjoyed the media’s representation of this piece of news. The newspapers have fully embraced the comic relief apparent in this absurd news that many will claim is a quality distinct to Nepal – “Nepal ma ta yestai fantoos kura matrai hunchha.” The media has highlighted the event in the front page, as the main piece of news. Yesterday’s Kantipur had the headline “Jahaj chadera musale ghumyo Malaysia ra Hongkong” which immediately got me thinking about Stuart Little – in this case our very own localized version. While the news is enough mockery of our state and its state of affairs, the fact that the media has prioritized this piece of news over others also implies mockery towards the regular frontrunners in the media. Baburam Bhattari and Prachanda have literally been sidelined. Gentlemen, it seems like your time in the spotlight is over.

It seems like overnight, a national hero was born in a country desperate for any kind of heroism. While there has been an offense strategy adopted by the Nepal Airlines officials to spook out our beloved Chi Chi from his abode, there is still controversy as to whether this “problem” has been solved entirely. It seems like our hero has a bit of a knack for being persistent and standing for this rights. Keep persevering, Chi Chi. I’ll be rooting for you!

I'd respond but then what's the point of talking to a wall? Parakhi folks just post their piece and don't respond; even big name editorials respond to readers comment.
I have just stopped reading their "blogs."

Defiant Nepal Airlines rats on Air India, other peers

By Sudeshna Sarkar, IANS,

Kathmandu : After being forced to halt flights two days in a row following fears that mice were on board and becoming the butt of unflattering reports in the media at home and abroad, Nepal's beleaguered national carrier Thursday sought to fight back, saying it was not alone in the rat race.

Nepal Airlines in a statement Thursday said there were a number of instances of the four-footed stowaway being found on board other airlines as well, including that of neighbour India's national carrier Air India.

The statement detailed seven instances between 2006 and the current year when rodents rode or were suspected to be present aboard the aircraft of various international airlines. Air India had the dubious distinction of featuring the most in them -- three times.

In September 2009, a mouse was detected inside the Air India plane in London, while in 2010 February, a second one was found in its aircraft in Riyadh, the Nepal Airlines said.

In January 2010, while an Air India flight was about to take off from Dubai for Delhi, a third rat sighting was reported, the statement said.

Besides Air India, the other airlines that carried the unwelcome passenger were said to be the American Airlines and United Airlines, two of the largest airlines in the world, the Atlanta-based Delta Airlines and the Scandinavian Airlines, the flag carrier of Denmark, Norway and Sweden.

Nepal Airlines said an American Airlines Boeing-767 was reported to have a mouse in 2006, so did the United Airlines aircraft in January 2008 while readying to fly from Washington to Beijing.

Delta Airlines faced the same furry furore before heading for London from New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport in November 2009 while the latest mouse incident occurred last month when the Scandinavian Airlines was flying from Sweden to Chicago Aug 17.

The Nepali Airlines, which hit the headlines in the past for sacrificing goats for the safety of flights, ran into the fresh ridicule after its Boeing-757 flight to Bangkok was grounded at Kathmandu's Tribhuvan International Airport Monday so a mouse on board could be trapped, swatted or chased out.

It ran into more trouble over suspected mouse landing Tuesday at the Hong Kong airport. However, Thursday's statement dismissed reports about a mouse reappearing on its aircraft in Hong Kong.

It said the Hong Kong Aircraft Engineering Corporation that was entrusted with the maintenance of the aircraft carried a thorough search of the aircraft and could not find any rodent on board.

Despite its denial and the naming of other airlines sporting mice on board, the state carrier would find it harder to live the commotion down due to its chequered career.

It has been pursued by allegations of corruption and mismanagement. Even as the mouse sightings were reported, Nepal's apex court sentenced a former top brass of the airline, R. Chaturvedi, to 18 months' prison and a stiff fine of over NRS 20 million for corruption during his tenure.

A rat was found scurrying in the cabin of an Alaska Airline plane.

The Alaskan Airlines Boeing 737 jet had just left the gate and was taxing to the runway at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport when the rodent was spotted scurrying in the cabin.

Passengers and crew were forced to disembark and board another aircraft causing a delay of 90 minutes to the flight.

Spokesperson for Alaska Airlines, Bobbie Egan, said the plane would not be returned to full service until a full maintenance check was carried out.

Workers will be checking to see if the rat has caused any damage to the aircraft's equipment or if it has chewed any wires.

Pest control will also have to certify that the plane is rat free before it can return to service.

Egan said that the airline is still trying to work out how the pest got aboard the flight.

She said: 'Sometimes rodents can seek shelter in strange places.'
