US Open | It Must Be Love

The best sporting event of the summer in New York is the US Open. It has been a staple of New York and a curtain call to summer for many years. When US Open posters appear in the subways and buses around the city, it’s that time of the year when I catch tennis fever.

The United States Open Tennis Championships date back to 1881. The US Open website has data on the tournament dating back to 1968. The coveted tennis tournament takes place for two weeks from the end of August to early September each year at Flushing Meadows. The top tennis players in the world and emerging young talent take to the court amidst a fanatic tennis crowd.

Last year, I went to the US Open tryouts. Anyone can go to these sessions and watch players in the outside courts. In my first US Open experience, I saw Blake Strode play Ivan Dodig and it was very exciting. After Ivan’s impressive win, I walked around and watched other matches that were taking place. I do not follow tennis religiously but was enjoying every moment at the US Open.

This year’s US Open has had many highlights in and outside of the tennis courts. From Rafael Nadal’s collapse during the press conference after his win over David Nalbandian to Andy Roddick swearing at the referees and Novak Djokovic’s dancing after the match with Nikolay Davdyenko, this US Open tournament has overtaken social media for more than just match highlights. Even the First Lady, Michelle Obama made it to her first US Open on Friday, September 9, 2011.

The Super Saturday featured Roger Federer against Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal against Andy Murray. The Women’s Singles final took place on Sunday between Samantha Stosur and Serena Williams and Samantha prevailed. The Men’s Singles final is set for tomorrow with Nadal facing Djokovic, a rematch of last year’s final. Last year Nadal won his first ever US Open. For tomorrow’s match I am rooting for Nadal.

There are so many events that place in New York City throughout the year and especially in the summer time. If you are a tennis fan, most likely you have been to the Open or are planning to go be there someday. But even if you are not a big tennis fan, the US Open is an event that you should experience because it is one of a kind.

I was in favor of Federer and he was 40 - 0 to win the match and he lost the game was very disappointing.
Like Aggasi won the Wimbledon after a long gap, I wanted to see something like that.

Is this a blog?
...Now back to tennis!

I could never have imagined Djokovic to play at this level, but I would have loved to see another Federer-Nadal matchup (maybe one final time). Also, this might be a better final matchup because Nadal always seems to have Federer's number in the finals. Not to diminish women's tennis but Men's game right now is so much more competitive and fun to watch.
