A hefty supply of yak meat — hidden in a shipment of sweaters, shawls and pants from Nepal — turned up at JFK Airport, Customs officials said this week.
Customs agents seized about 291 pounds of the meat — as well as dung pods and plant seeds — from the shipment, officials said.
Yak meat is prohibited from being imported into the US under a law that bans ruminant products from countries affected by foot and mouth disease and other infectious cattle viruses.
“Foot and mouth disease is a worldwide concern that can spread quickly and cause significant economic damage,” officials said in a statement.
Some seeds are also banned because of their potential to contaminate other plants, officials said.
It wasn’t immediately clear who was responsible for the shipment.
Back in January, two Mongolian women were arrested at Washington-Dulles International Airport for smuggling 42 pounds of horse meat, 3 liters of yak milk and other ruminant meat hidden in juice boxes.
