Nepal and India are speeding up the process leading to construction of what could be the world's highest dam on the Sapta Koshi River in eastern Nepal. A team of experts from both countries has begun work on a feasibility study of the Sapta Koshi multipurpose project. Proponents of the mega project hold that Nepal would reap tremendous economic benefits from development of the project.

The mega project is expected to generate 5,500 megawatts of electricity. The irrigation system under the proposed Koshi project will water 300,000 hectares of agricultural land in Nepal and more than that area in India's Bihar state.

A 165 kilometer (102 mile) long waterway from Nepal's Chatara in eastern Nepal, where the Koshi River flows out from the hills to enter the southern plains, to Kolkata Port in India is another vision for the huge project.

However,Nepali experts do not agree. Some experts in Nepal are against the massive dam.According to geologist,"The proposed high dam will be built in a seismic fault zone in the southern flank of the Himalayan range. Constructing a dam with more than 300 meters height in this area is to invite destruction".
The issue of human displacement is another problem. According to preliminary estimates, hundreds of villages and several thousands of people in Nepal will have to be displaced to make way for the project. When the world is experiencing problems in resettlement of the displaced. But we are heading towards it.

Loss of agricultural land and biodiversity caused by inundation is another issue raised by critics.
however my biggest X-factor is:"I am not optimistic that the Koshi high dam would ever be constructed. It seems that Nepal is handing control over its huge water resources to India. Once we, in the name of joint venture, give all rights over Sapta Koshi to India, Nepal will not be able to develop any project in any of the major tributaries of this river," political analyst K. B. Pradhanang predicts.

What u guys have to say? lets hear about it.

Hey Swaati! are u sure about the Project!! I have not read anywhere about such project being proposed (it may be due to the fact that I don't have access to the appropriate recourse) in recent time. Any way, I support the idea of Dada Giri and in fact I am kind of skeptic about this kind of huge project in our country. We have seen the recent tragedy associated with Tsunami. I guess, Nepalese will benefit less and suffer much than Indians do with such project. So, be careful about such project!!

Yeah, i do agree with u guys. What i am trying to say is in recent proccess its seem Indian goverment is more agressive for this project and our goverment seems to be lured in this fantasy dream. thinking how it can help in our irrigation system how we will be able to produce huge amount of electricity. Even dreaming of exporing elctricity to India. It seems so funny to think exporting electricity to india cuz they (indian goverment) have asked Nepal to lay a line for it by her own cost. We know, how nepal herself is not able to lay line for herself, how she can do it in Indian soil. Its just like having a daydream. How can it be economically sound for us?

Swati,
Would you mind to make me one thing clear, whether you are talking about the 2nd phase of this project? I think its 1st phase has already been completed, isn't it?
*** *** ***

The feasibility of this project was conducted in 1981 by the government of India which comprises of construction of 269 m high concrete dam on Kosi river at about 2 km upstream of Barah Kshetra with a storage volumn of 13,450 million cum and hydropower station of installed capacity 3,000 MW and annual energy generationof 16,810 GWh. The project also includes construction of a barrage near Chatra about 8km downstream of the dam. The barrage would supply irrigation water to total of about 1.522 million ha of land which include 976,000 ha in India and about 546,000 ha in Nepal. A further power generation of 300MW is possible through the canal system. This project has multipurpose dimension including flood control, sedimentation, navigation together with irrigation and hydrpower. This irrigation command area of this project would overlap the existing irrigation systems such as Sunsari Morang and West Kosi project in Nepal and Kosi project in India. The Project would also overlap the proposed Kankai and Sun Kosi-Kamala diversion projects in Nepal. Considering its multifacial as well as international dimension together with high capital investment, the project needs careful assessment and negotiation with India.

I am just scare here that Nepal goverment may fall into prey of Indain counterpart. They are selling these dreams(above mentioned by DADA ji) to Nepal. Historically India has taken full advantage of incompetency of Nepali goverment. The bilateral treaties like Koshi and Gandaki as well as Tanakpur barrage are example of it. It has exploited Nepal whenever and wherever possible. Nepali authorities have never been able to match theri counterparts. Why is so?
Is that cuz India has helped us. Why our Nepali politicains have tendency to be grateful to india? is that cuz they helped our politicians to launch movements against oppressice Panchayat govement. Do we have to pay debt to india for helping for that? As there is an saying."ungratefulness towards its benefactor is a mark of a strong nation."
Why our politcians always make favorable decision even they know its not in best interest of nepal.

.
3000 MW or 5500 MW ??

If 336 MW project (Chukha) in Bhutan has the major role for the increment of their civil-servants' salary by 45 % , why to STOP the MEGA HYDRO PROJECTS in NEPAL ?????????????
