http://www.nepalnews.com.np/archive/2005/mar/mar17/news04.php Interim govt. should be formed to hold elections: Bhattarai Former Prime Minister and senior leader of Nepali Congress, Krishna Prasad Bhattarai?who led the interim government after the restoration of democracy in 1990-- has urged His Majesty King Gyanendra to constitute an interim government with a mandate to hold parliamentary elections within one year.
In an exclusive interview with the BBC Nepali Service on Wednesday, Bhattarai said he did not want to return to power or be in a government pay roll. ?But, if I am asked to head such a government once again, and if the King initiates the process, I may consider (such an offer).?
It was during Bhattarai?s tenure (1990-91) that the interim government drafted the Constitution of the Kingdom of Nepal, 1990, and conducted the first parliamentary elections in 1991 after a gap of over 30 years. Bhattarai, however, lost elections paving way to NC leader G P Koirala to head the majority government.
Responding to a query by BBC?s Sushil Sharma, Bhattarai?who had remained away from active politics after resigning from the post of premier in 2000 amid intense intra-party feud?said he was still active in politics.
?I am of the view that the King should not run the government himself. We need monarchy for the next several centuries. And, only the benevolent monarchy that works in the benefit of people can last that long,? he added.
When asked how he would deal with the Maoists, Bhattarai said it would be a huge challenge. ?You have to accept the Maoists, that they also have got presence in the Nepali politics. We have to tell them and persuade them that they should cooperate and join the parliamentary elections. Otherwise, we should tell them that they will miss the bus,? said Bhattarai.
The 81-year-old leader said there was no need of (holding elections to the) constituent assembly as being demanded by the Maoists. ?The present constitution should remain in force for the next 100 years and it should be taken to every household across the country,? he added.
Bhattarai further said he believed that (despite the present crisis) the future of Nepal was bright?like that of a piece of gold. ?If I am given an opportunity, I think I would be able to provide some relief to the people and carry out some development works. The rest is in the hands of the God,? he said philosophically. nepalnews.com by Mar 17 05
