What kind of sick person would participate in this type of cruel event... we should be shame of ourselves to celebrate this as a cultural festival every year.. I guess every thing should have a limit.. why has this festival not been banned.. I can not even think of pain and suffering of that goat which is being killed by pulling its part from all sides...

neupane,
(hope others dont mind me talking personal)

when i was small, parents were vegetarian, bahunko family, so was I. When I grew up, was sent in a boarding school but they beforehand told the officials that I was a veg, so again remained a veg. Went to campus, by that time, my attitude was quite reluctant towards meat products. Joined Pulchok campus, gave up my vegetarianism for a while. " like that.... I was more than convinced. so started with eggs, then a few picnics, the Malekhu ko geological trip and fish, gardai gardai momo ma pugesi ta nothing was left.

Came abroad, never thought I would return back to veg (had vowed not to eat beef though) but happened to see a program by Canadian Broadcasting Corp (CBC). Hope it is still in their website (cbc.ca) Saw how the meat is produced in industrialized nations. Basically, they dont leave anything out, ए बाबा, जिउँदो केही नखानी गिद्ध ले पनि मरेको गिद्ध त खाँदैन, so nature must have a strong cause why these species are not cannibals. But these so called "scientists" are making herbivores like cow, goat and others like chicken eating each-other. So what happened, some brain cells of these farm (factory?) animals got screwed up and mutated. These cells affect the DNA and carried from parents to children. Such cells are like they never die, its a complete new evolution of sth virus like inside the cells of these animals, and it is called BSC or sth like that (the mad cow disease). If one eats such meat, they will die within a month and will also transfer to a new born baby if the baby was ____ within the infected time. Simultaneously, after the outbreak of madcow disease here, though I was supposedly safe as I did not eat beef in particular, a wave of vegetarianism swept in our ईलाका. So, I again resorted back to the good old practice of vegetarianism.

And you really feel the difference, you tend to feel refreshed and always healthy...perhaps its only a psychological perception or not, i dont know, but I am enjoying it.

busybee,
I am not sure if they are totally chemcal-free. like they use compost fertilizers instead of nitro-fertilizers, but still if they use cow manure and as such, then there sure should be some traces of chemicals left. But two things made me believe they are indeed different from regular produces:
1. Distinct taste. Just try out potato- make a curry as you normally would do, see the difference

2. They putresce earlier.

Just my observations,

Busybee,

I did not meant that killing in peaceful way is good and merciless way is bad. Killing is still killing I totally agree with your point that "Kan jata bata samate ni samtne nai ho". I was just trying to say that no matter it has been followed by our forefathers why can not we scrap of this type of cruel thing from our culture..

But what I meant is if it has to be done do it in respectful way. The difference I am point out to similar to capital punishment there is a cruel law in Saudi and other countries where they kill people by stoning to death while in developed and human right aware country use lethal injection which give minimum suffering to the person being killed. I mean we can not go out and force all people to be vegan which would be best thing if it happens ... but who are non-veg eaters try to respect the animal when you are producing meat for consumption.

Shree 5 your view is really great I will try to search for that web link... may be it will turn more of us into vegan...

well, here is a brief intro about madcow from Wikipedia. Forgot the cbc (- www.cbc.ca) or ctv (- www.ctv.ca) link, that was really brainstorming. Anyway, the main theme is that in the industrialized countries, they basically feed the remains and carcasses of some animals to other animals. Nature must have a strong cause why these animals were not cannibals by birth but the scientists and corporations are messing up the natural order. Even though all the effects are not visible right now, it does not guarentee that there are no other effects that affect the human consumers.

But, again, its a personal choice.

Hope Nepe, being a biologist, will explain us about this human-imposed-cannibalism in cattle and the possible implications.

prajatantra, actually it was a tv-show "broadcast", cant remember exactly whether it was W5 (ctv) or by mansbridge (cbc). anyway, thx for the website, it pretty much contains everything tht was on the show, except its very brief. so u too seem to be a canuck, eh? whr from?

I don't agree with Busybee's thread about killing. Killing someone by slicing the throat is a lot worse than shooting on the head. I hope you got my point. People usually don't think about the animals when they eat meat but they will definitely feel emotional when they see the animal die in front of them especially if it's barbaric killing. Same like smoking. You know that you'll die one day of smoking but you don't quit smoking. You do things even when you know it's wrong. That's human nature.

I agree that Nepal's culture is very primitive and it's because it's been isolated from the rest of the world for a long time (Thanks to the Kings). A lot of things need to change and it will definitely not happen overnight. I hope the new generation in Nepal is more open minded.

Shree5, I also switched to organic a few years ago. Started drinking soymilk, cage free eggs, and organic fruits and vegetables. I feel a lot healthier these days. Maybe it's only psychological, but I hope in the long run it will pay.

Ahh... I c Shree5,
i asked that question to you because i was reading an article few years back about veg issues. Out of many ideas and opinions, one interesting was, being veg just for one's sake (Like it will bring diseases, dangerous, chemical treated etc...) vs. being veg for the love of animals (like hurting/killing animals is bad...).
anywho, thanks for your story ;-)

Good job fountaindew, keep it up

But I am pseudo-veg, (i believe its not hypocritical anyway, so used the term pseudo-veg) because I dont bar dairy products like milk and butter and as such. Regarding the organics too, So, as u rightly said as in the example of smoking, I tend to practice as far as I can but I am not an activitist, per se. Nevertheless, I have always barred myself from eating flesh and blood. And honestly, I have felt that it does make a difference, you seem to have more stamina than while eating meat and non-organics, khoi psychological matra ho ki, hoina jasto lagchha.

Keep rolling...

Shree5 I totally agree with what you said. I'm also a pseduovegetarian I mean I eat milk products but milk itself I don't feel like when I think of all the hormones induced into the cow. And I don't ask for organic stuffs when I go to other people's houses. I guess I'm only taking a small initiative but I like it. Something's better than nothing.

naitakwan I think the king's responsibility is to guide the people not follow them. Why is he a king if he follows? He has to take charge of the situation and introduce some tough laws. Or is he afraid to do that because he might lose public support? And I'm not saying that he needs to do that overnight. He could have done that in 10-20 yrs time. Clearly he has no intention of doing that.

The worst thing the kings have done is to keep Nepal isolated from the rest of the world. That has made the people narrow minded and utterly conservative and they will do these kinds of things in years to come.

It actually HURTS to look at the picture, the "pullers" looking quite ecstatic....

I can't seem to get out of my mind, how the goat must feel while being "pulled" frm every possible angle, while drowning.

...if only the goat was an Olympic swimmer, with the strength of an Ox.

*Saddened*
