Hey guys,

I am a new immigrant in canada. I have been living here for about nine months. Right now I am studying in Grade 12 and about to graduate in four months. I am planning to go to University of Toronto or York University for my postsecondary education. But i am not able to decide which program should i choose. I have always wanted to have a career in computer/IT field. I have had this desire since i was a kid studying in Kathmandu. Now i am hearing all these stories from my parents and relatives about canadian and american immigants especially from countries like nepal, india and pakistan who have degree in software engineering but are unable to get jobs in their desired fields. After doing plenty of research i found that the prospects of getting jobs in canada is very good for computer engineering/programming graduates from canadian unversities/colleges.But i don't know what are the job prospects for someone of my background. My parents want me to take business administration or accounting course.
I am really confused what should i do. Could I please get some advice from anyone who have the experience of studying in canada/usa or working in the computer field. What are my chances of getting jobs as a programmer/analyst in canada and also USA.What should i expect in computer engineering program? What should i do to get success in this program? If i choose business administration then what would be my chances of getting jobs and how much salary should i expect to get.

Your advice would really help me to choose the right career path.

nepkid19,

i suggest you to do whatever your parents have told you to do because chances of getting jobs in engineering or IT is narrowing down. i am not discouraging you but i am telling you the fact because i have been in this situation and have gained quite an experience. but hey, if you do engineering/IT with BBA, that's the best man. you'll be like a hot cake man.

I didn't completely understand what did u mean by doing IT with BBA . My knowledge about postsecondary education is very limited. Please foregive my ignorance.

NepKid 19,
IT field prospect is very unpredictable. Back in the mid and late 90's, it was booming. Then all of a sudden it went to a slack phase in the eary 2000s. But after 2003, its again doing good and now it is in boom once again. If you want to do IT/Computer science degree then this is something you may want to think about. Also, nowadays everybody from any other field is working in IT field literally speaking. Do you want to do what most of the people are doing or you want to do something more innovative?

Computer/Electrical Engineering is however a little bit different because it involves more of a hardware engineering than information flow technology. While computer science deals with the application of software and information technologies, computer engineering involves indepth hardware engineering, hybrid and embedded system technologies. IT/BBA or MBA is another aspect which deals mostly with the management and analytical aspect of IT. After IT/Administration degree, you will not only be confined to development and engineering of IT but you will get to deal with managing and analyzing software technologies.

Choice is yours. Good luck!

Do it bro, I got crazy scholarships from U of T and Waterloo, but bau villain, didnt want to let go of me, (bau aama ko dher maya bho bhane pani kuro bigrincha). Th\yat iz why, goto York. Study Mathematics or Engineering, namely chemical so you can get a job in the Oil n Gas Sector. Do volunteer work, do extra curricular stuff, youll make it big. But yah, if you study compooter and myath, it eez de best. or study business at toronto.

Waterloo's undergrad Engineering program is considered to be better. It is also best in mathematical science. However, U of T has been rated best Canadian universtiy by many raters. In one lists of ranking of world's top 500 university, I saw U of T at 19th top university in the world. In that list, York is the 500th. McMaster at 93rd and Waterloo in some 300th in the ranking. However, criteria determing the rank of a university, so any should be OK i guess.

if you also plan to attend to Master's program later, it is the best to joing U of T i guess.
