Can anyone recommend a good univ in the US for an MS degree in Computer Networking? A friend of mine has his BS in Computer Engineering and is really interested in this field. He is also a Cisco Certified Neworking Associate (CCNA).

I know a lot of universities offer Computer Networking as a course in their Computer Science or ECE curriculum, but does anyone know a uni that has a department or a major dedicated to Computer Networking?

Here is some info:

Boston University
- http://www.bu.edu/bulletins/eng/item04.html#anchor5

Clarkson University
Has good software/computer engineering programs - might offer a major in computer networking, check it out.

Florida Institute of Technology
- http://ee.fit.edu/grad.html#mscomputer

Hope this helps.

I may be wrong, but MIT and Ivy Leagues do not seem to offer hardcore engineering majors. A degree in Computer Science is very abundant though.

Here are some schools I know that offer Computer Engineering at graduate level:

Carnegie Mellon University
Duke University
SUNY Binghamton
Lehigh University
Northeastern University

Depends exclusively on the applicant's background --
Can't just say MIT or CMU. Where did he do his BS in Computer Engineering from? How much of the Networking knowledge does he have at this point of time? I'm asking this because Computer Engineering does not focus much of Networking hardcores in its BS in general. Also, having certifications such as CCNA are only the add-ons on the resume and salary; don't help much in the admission process. What about the GRE score? That's where the magic lies on!! UG GPA ... another important factor. After considering all those facts, you would be ready for the right college hunt!!!

nuts,
i would correct you on that.
IVY's and TOP TIES COLLEGE DO NOT HAVE SEPERATE COMPUTER ENGINEERING DEGREE. Because COMPUTER ENGINEERING is basically specialization of ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING.

so you would get a TERMINAL DEGREE IN ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING with specialization in COMPUTER ENGINEERING.

COMPUTER SCIENCE is for ALGORITHMS, PROGRAMMING, DATABASES etc etc more to do with the SOFTWARE/APPLICATION/DESIGN portion of COMPUTER.

getting back to KRISTEN's question

which aspect of COMPUTER NETWORKING does your friend want to pursue?
HARDWARE:PROTOCOL ====>>> can take up ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING DEGREES.
you can study GSM/CDMA/TDMA. SONET/ATM/FIBER OPTICS/WIRELESS/SS7/MICROWAVE COMMUNICATION : DATA COMMUNICATION ETC.

SOFTWARE ========>> More in the range of programming application. You do need some hardware understanding but basic knowledge would do. So, you would spend more time on writing application using various languages implementing various features.

I ASSUME he/she is oriented more toward HARDWARE:PROTOCOL level [ having CCNA].so I would advise SCHOOLS with strong EE.

=====================================================
as always once again
what do i know (O:

kirsten,

Well, If you are looking for MS school, there are tons but specialisation in Networking which you need have skilset to work in realtime environment, none.

You go to grad school for the digree not for gaining the skil required to work in IT industry which keeps changing every 3-6 months either it is HW/SW or any application etc and none of the Univ in the world can match their course with rapid change in IT technology.I am sure, you would have study those 8 bit, 16 bit Microporcessor at max at school and those basic networking protocol and some programing.Where in realtime, it is different.

You can joing any school but make sure that you get all the professional certification like CCNP,CCSIE etc, and of course today is fibre optics world. So dont forget to do Brocade SAN, EMC etc, these will give you extra advantage when you come out from grad school.

I have been wokring 12 yrs in IT industry starting from H/W , Programing,ERP,SAP,Networking, SAN, Storage and finaly to Networking/SAN/sytem security etc.

If you are already CCNA, good that you are already in track to become Networking professional, but does certification alone helps you to become good and highly paid one ? NO !.

you got to know how to implement your skil set into project and this is posible only when you have lot practice. You can buy Cisco or Brocade any switch on ebay within $100-$200 and practice in home itself. Make your own lab rather than spedning lot outside.Believe me , you can have your own Network lab within $500 and you can share with like minded friend who are willing to gaiin knowledge, This definately pays good result in long run.

I may not be able to recomend to right school for the networking but if you need to know what Networking stuffs required to Work in dream project like IBM,SUN,HP,Defence project, wall street, NASA or any USA gov project, you are always welcome to send query.

Thanks

thapap, thanks for the correction. I would tend to think that 2nd tier universities that offer a dedicated computer engineering major would be a better choice than EE degree from ivy leagues with comp E specialization. Just my thought.
