tara i think it is a body of members who are vested wtih the responsiblity of creating a new consitution...so the consitutent assembly that is meeting on friday is going to decide on teh new consitution (which i think we desparately need) and moiasts insurgency and the monarch as well (i think they will get rid of dhara 127, what you say)

U r right LFC,

It has the right to change the constitution without any objections...however, it has to be confirmed by the House of Representatives I think by 2/3 votes...I think there should not be any problem in the current contest, as NC and UML together can do it all...no RPP needed...

CONSTITUTIONAL ASSEMBLY IS AN ELECTION WHICH DECIDES THE FATE OF KING, PARTIES, MAOISTS AND MOST IMPORTANTLY THE PEOPLE OF THE COUNTRY. ITS AN ELECTION WHEREIN EVERY VOTE FROM NORMAL CITIZEN COUNTS WHICH WILL DECIDE HOW THE CONSTIUTION OF THE COUNTRY SHOULD BE.

In our case it will decide:

1) Role of monarchy (republic/constitutional/cermemonial)?
2) Position and role of Maoists in the political framework
3) Role of Army
4) Role of Maoists army
5) Other norms which guide the politics of the country.

1990 constitution is outdated, because it is not legitimate since normal people did not vote for it.

Knightcralwer , u got it worng. Contitutional assembly is the outcome of the election supervised by some crdible international unit, prefarably UN. This constitutional assembly makes the constitution that decides what kind of role, if any, the monarch will have. THat means it can abolish the monarchy as well. This elecetion , if held, will be held after RNA and Maoists lay their arms under the supervision of say UN. This is the most democratic way to let people of Nepal write constitution of Nepal.

Well, for other norms and regulations the committee elected by the people decide upon them. But for major issues, like monarchy, we normal people can vote just like we did in 2036 BS.

consitutent assembly members, who draft the consitution, are suppposed to be elected by the people becasue the new consitution should represnt all citizens.
but with the maoist insurgency and all, i am assuming, the people who draft the new constitution will be teh same peopless.....same leaders....would love to diss them, but things look better now than yesterday, so i am happy for now.

how do you see tat happening with the maoist insurgency....if the consitution assembly is to represnt alllll nepalis, then first maoists need to surrender their arms, come to the table, hold talks and then together they must hold elections, and the winner o f these electiosn should be, in turn, teh members who write the new constitution, decide the monarch's role and decide on national and local elections for a new government...
waht is hte possiblity taht this will happen?

lfc123, Maoists have been demanding this all the while. They have been saying that if UN or some neutral internationla party comes to supervise the election to constitutional assembly, they will lay the arms, but for that RNA should also remain silent during the election. After the election is over, if UN says that the election is free and fair, Maoists will accept the outcome of the election. After that a process to merge Maoists army and RNA will begin. This is what Maoists are demanding. If the roylaists and the tradtional forces in Nepal do not create any obstacles in this process, then this is a good way for the safelanding of Maoists.

But the BIG question is , will the king agree to it? Royalists have always opposed such election. They are also against the UN supervision.

constitution assembly basically is the way to throw king out...and make a way out for either girija or prachanda to rule nepal....tai ho..nepali lai chiane vanda dherai democracy. by the way forget about throwing king out....that will never happen, neither India nor US will let that happen.
