here is a question that i have .....
ppl want to pursue their education to terminal degrees... ie. get PhD's . But there is an issue.... a common perception that ppl go for PhD or keep on getting degrees because they cannot get a JOB i.e WORK in US.

i thought that was not the perception with ppl i.e. educated Nepalese bunch but .. I was Wrong.. it does not matter who u talk to they seem to believe that having H1B and a WORK i.e. (60k/annum) job is more important than anything else....
My request is pls.. enlighten me with ur feelings (O:.
thank you all......

thapap, the 90's non CS major hehe.

As always what do you know?

hello hi chhodiye "jai maataaki" boliye hahahhahahaha........

burp....excuse me...that one was nasty

ok let me get serious now. hehe

=============
excellent question.

here's my say on this:

Phd or Job? ---its a personal choice my friend. US is a free country so an individual can do what he feels like doing provided if it does not harm other individuals or groups. so if others, be it educated or not, give importance to 60k/annum and you want to get a Phd, i say give a damn to their say and GO FOR YOUR OWN interest. i m telling you because i assume that you are a EE major and i know about it a bit.

WHY?

1) US job market is changing. it is not what it used to be say 10 yrs back. hi-tech companies with the likes of Intel, Microsoft, AMD, NASA always look for specialists these days coz they can afford so they want Phds.

2) Phd is a sureshot stamp which is a licence that you can exploit for taking a leadership role in industries right away, you can lead the research direction of the industries. You can ask and set your salary by yourself. Dont worry about 60k/annum that you are being offered at the moment.

3) Masters in engineering with few years of experience can also lead you there to that position but it is not that easy.

-REASONS
a) THere are too many people with masters degree these days, so it may take a while before you get noticed.

b) you have to stick to a boring 8am-5pm jobs, which may excite you in the beginning, but then it will become monotonous after few months. you will be machinated.

c) Phd students are exposed to research right away so they have new findings and exciting stuffs to deal with everyday, which keep them on their toes, but will give you immense pleasure if you enjoy researching.

GO FOR IT.
this is my personal suggestion to you. it might not apply to all.

A friend,
Loote

it is entirely personal choice.
there is no gurantee a PHD will make more money than non phd .That all depends on leadership skills in USA.Techinical people will always remain techincal .Atmost become techincal manager if the person has so many years of experiences and has little interest in managing small groups.If you are aiming high PHD just to make money then forget it!

But if you enjoy what you are doing .i mean studying then what can you ask for more.8-5 job is boring as hell!!
Phd you do everything in your own pace .it is kind of fun at the same time challenging.

So , money should not be a factor to go for phd.Phd is something a way of achieving nirvana hahahah kinda in knowledge in your field of interest.

So,at the end it is personal choice how much you want to earn and learn.Do you know that there is not a lot of difference in earningin life time in usa with person with highschool degree compared to college degree.

now responding to loote,
i would make few correction in ur assumption here,
1. 60k/annum was an average MS grads salary..... .
2. ur job is 8-5 if u make it to.. otherwise it is never.. (and i was in industry for 5 yrs.. so neither my work day was 8 hrs not was it 8-5 (O: )
3. research in industry is far satiating than academia... [ i had a feeling before that politics in industry is so gr8.. but in academics.. its even worse... ]

====================================================
as always
what do i know (O:

thapap,
research in industry is far satiating than academia.
=====
not necessarily. if you ask your professors, they will prolly say NO.

Why?

1) you have less freedom in research in industries. i mean you have to stick to the norms and policies of the particular company u r working for.

2) in universities, you can do research of your choice, can approach in the way u want. i mean u r the "king" (i don't believe in monarchy hai feri--dont take me otherwise hehe) of your work. its like you being a CEO and promoter of the work u do. :)

3) industrial research is far more challenging i agree but will keep you on your toes all the time. nevertheless u will be exposed to the hitech companies and their bigshots directly. u will be pushed all the time regardless of the circumstances.
