Dating, love affairs…and even pre-marital sex is no longer taboo amongst today’s teenagers. Not even in conservative cities. True, one may not see many boys and girls openly holding hands on the main roads or kissing in parked cars but many affairs are conducted on the sly…without the knowledge of parents. Parental disapproval and society’s contempt often drives friendship and romance with the opposite sex underground! Boys and girls from even traditional families may be dating but secrecy is the name of the game.

So what's the point?
Nepalese have always had makai ghari and what not. Many Nepalese communities barring the so-called "sanatan" communities (especially in cities) have always had - to some extent - liberal views on relationships and sex. "Jaari Pratha" did not frown upon "eloping with another's spouse" provided the guy paid certain amount to the cuckold husband. Even to this day some remote communities in the far west practice polyandry (having more than one husband at the same time - Draupadi style).

Even the earlier Aryan society were more promiscuous - hence the "erotic" sculptures in many Hindu temples and more famously, the Ajanta caves in India.

Having said all that, I myself belong to more conservative group. I do frown upon extramarital relationship aka cheating-on-your-spouse. As far as pre-marital sex is concerned, I have only one thing to say: make sure you take the necessary precautions - better to be safe than sorry.
