KATHMANDU, March 19 - Although the ruling Seven Party Alliance and the Maoists are holding final round of talks for the Maoist's induction in the interim government, Maoist cadres in the countryside are still intimidating and abducting the cadres of the SPA.
Maoists on March 9 thrashed Pyarilal Shahi and Kalpana Singh of Nepali Congress, and Tika Shahi of CPN-UML, for supporting the reinstatement of a police post in Darma VDC of Humla district, according to Jivan Bahadur Shahi, a Central Working Committee member of NC-D who hails from Humla.

Pyarilal, Kalpana and Tika were reported to have fled to neighboring Mugu district fearing further Maoist attacks.

The Maoists also abducted last week NC (D) cadre Netra Bahadur Shahi, whose whereabouts is still unknown, said Shahi. "Locals fear that Maoists may have killed him."

"The Maoists held Netra Bahadur from Darbigaunda while he was on his way to Simikot, and thrashed him severely before he was abducted," Shahi said quoting the locals.

An all-party meeting held at the District Administration Office on Sunday decided to visit Darbigaunda village to search for Netra Bahadur and to start probing the incident.

"Maoist cadres still possess socket bombs and intimidate locals," said Shahi. "They are forcing locals to support the Maoists during Constituent Assembly elections."

When contacted, Maoist Spokesperson Krishna Bahadur Mahara said, "We have received information about a scuffle between [Netra Bahadur] Shahi and our cadres over a social issue but later Netra went missing on his way home." Mahara said that the party would investigate the incident and take action against those found guilty.

Mahara also said politicization of local disputes was a wong practice and could affect the ongoing peace process.
