Dear all,

There seems to be so many Nepali professors in US universities these days. I am just thinking if we together could initiate to start a new university or transform existing university according to what we have seen in US universities.

Main changes being:
1. Various departments located in the same premises.
2. Students (undergraduate or graduate) being able to chage their major.
3. Students being able (or encouraged) to work on campus.
4. Scholarships through research funds (funds initially directed from US/Europe interested to research about NEPAL)

You can add others in the list.

I think it is quite possible in NEPAL. If we are able to tie-up with some good university in US, graduates may even be eligible to apply to US or other countries for that matter for jobs directly.

Opinions please. Thanks.

Hmm... Seems good. But why not Xform the existing colleges into universities.

From the root level -

What do u think about school(Below 10th or 10) pulling out from district exam and SLC??? Make everything independent. I dint learn even Basic thing till my 10th Grade. What about you?

I studied from more than 3 countries and still think that even some of the aspects of the US or Nepalese/ Indian/ Japanese education are poor. In the US u also know, what/why/how. Education of Nepal is Rote learning. Japanese go very specific which is deadly for any developing nation.

Im against the half of ur topic (US Standard).

As for instance-
In the US
Assertion : All the assignments are checked by TA

Reason: If TA doesnt know what a student has written coz the student perspective is as per Industrial standard. TA doesn't have Industrial experience. You would argue University is all about academics, why industry interface reqd??

My causal argument is We are from a developing nation, 90%(a rough figure) of us intend to work in an industry. Still we wanna go for intern why?

My question to all is - Can we make a research oriented university without Industrial Interface?

Lets develop the university curriculum, teaching pattern, course materials, exam pattern and make same as US universities does. Then everybody children n parents target our university as their final destination. Thus to accomodate these future students, the schools especially, private, will develop the fundaental courses needed. then gradually, eucation system will change. I think some universities might be interested to invest in nepal too who knows, but for this we need some capital.

Thyanboche,

It is just an idea. It is not a plan or topic that one would agree or disagree IMO.

By international standard, I meant increase in education standard (I do not know how anyone can disagree on that). Yes there may be disagreement on the ways to get there.

sabaiko satru,

if someone plans and make really nice proposal... i think it would not be THAT difficult to get capital or loan for that matter. Just look at how much peole are spending just to apply and come to US. Just adding that money may be sufficient to start.

I do agree with thyanboche that more important is 10th standard or less (primary, secondary education). Thanks for your comments.

:)

I believe the person who has started this thread has done so with a clean intention but I am sorry guys I don't believe this is possible unless the political system in the country changes for better. Till the time these Political leaders will use the kids in their teen age for their self interest nothing could be done. Do you believe any standard learning experience can be achieved if schools and colleges are on a strike for half of the year??? Do you believe any progress in education system could be made till the time when the decisions for the betterment of students and schools are not made by students and guardians but by So Called Student unions like NeBi Sangha, Akhil and Krantikari...sorry dude...nothing can be done till our political leaders stop using Schools, Colleges and Businesses for their sole advantage.

deshbhaktanepali,

Thanks for your comment. But tell me how long can we get away by blaming someone else (in this case politicians). Isn't it high time that WE at least try to do something. Politicians will alwasy be like that. Here in US as well I do not see too much respect for politicians. But people seem less concerned about what politicians are doing and minding more-or-less their own business.

Anyway guys it is just an idea. I seriously think if more people BELEIVE in this idea, the more closer we could be in having that as reality.

Keep ur comments flowing please. Thanks.

Unless and until peace is there...do you think any entreprenure will expand his business...any american professor will go there to teach risking his/her life...even if they go...do you think any school and college will risk to open it when strike is called...if the school can't have their planned schedule...if they can't operate in free and fair manner...how do you think the level of education will improve. The problems of political system and education system are not exclusive...they are very much related.

Deshbhakta,

I am not saying they are not unrelated. it is just..... actually anyway that is one of my dreams.. :) I am still a graduate student. I was just trying to see how many in the sajha would think it could be possible and some ... perhaps... encouragement..

If someone did initiate "this" i would be more than happy to help him/her in any way I can.

Thanks..

PS: deshbhakta, i am not critisizing you. I am happy that at least someone bothered to read and post their skepticism. Thanks again.
