PM under manifold tension

Kantipur Report

KATHMANDU, Sept 8 - Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala was in multiple tension Friday as one problem after another kept plaguing him. Most of the problems, however, were related to the allies in the ruling coalition.

The Maoist youth wing Young Communist League's plan to start opening a track road from Tilganga to Guheshwori from Saturday was the major problem he faced Friday. The area, where the Maoist youth wing is involved in opening the track road is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a famous golf course.

"May be UNESCO or the concerned government authorities complained about the Maoists' bullying attitude," said a Baluwatar source, when asked about the cause behind the PM's tension.

The Ministry of Physical Planning and Works has already given permission to Bagmati Sewerage Develo-pment Committee headed by Maoist leader Krishna KC.

Another problem was related to Nepal Sadbhavana Party (Anandi Devi), a fringe right-wing ally in the ruling coalition. Party Chair Anandi Devi Singh came to the PM's residence with a request, asking the prime minister to remove Minister for Industry, Commerce and Supplies Rajendra Mahato from his post and replace him with party General Secretary Shyam Sundar Gupta.

Irked by Minister Mahato's decision to remove Udaypur Cement Factory's chief executive Tara Kant Jha, a group of party leaders including Gupta and Jha had brought Singh to Baluwatar to remind Koirala about Singh's previous request to PM to recall Mahato from office.

The portrait of Prachanda with a caption "Prisoner No One, I am murderer" hung at Ratna Park by unidentified groups added further tension to the 85-year-old prime minister. Perhaps the Maoists had demanded that the PM take action against those involved in defaming their supremo.

Because of the tension, PM Koirala cut short his meeting with Deuba and gave him the task of settling differences between the two parties to the joint task team of the parties.
