SALYAN, April 23 - Despite their claim that they have already returned all the seized houses and property to make atmosphere for historic Constituent Assembly polls more conducive, Maoists have still been capturing houses of locals. Kirti Bahadur Basnet at Sibarath VDC-9 in the district is one example of Maoist atrocity.
Eventhough the Maoist district committee announced some two months ago that they had returned all the houses and property captured during the insurgency, they refused to hand over the house belonging to displaced Basnet.
Maoist cadre Kaliram Oli, who has been staying at Basnet's house, refused to return the house when Basnet reached the village on the eve of election.
"As the government has provided financial assistance to the displaced people as compensation, you have to first hand over such amount to our party if you want your house back," Basnet quoted Oli as saying.
Basnet further claimed Maoists extorted the money he had received from the government as compensation.
Following the Maoist refusal to hand over his house, Basnet immediately left the village. "I, along with my family members, was deprived of the franchise during the historic election," he claimed.
Maoists seized his house and 22 ropanies of land seven years ago accusing him of spying against their party.
