I believe most of us asians were brought up saying… READ YOUR BOOKS.. and when I say Asians.. it could be anyone from east-west-north-south.. yes.. our parents wanted us to be bookworm.. n there was nothing wrong with it.. n still ain’t.. remember ur days.. when u went to play football (yes I could have wrote soccer) or cricket // didn’t’ our parents spanked our arse .. it was more like a sin to be in sports .. BOOKS BOOOKS N BOOOOOKS.. I ain’t blaming them parents..

Neways.. the reason.. why I came up with this issue is.. I was at my soccer practice today.. n heard an indian guy tell his about 7-8 years old son… when his son told him..,,,i don’t like soccer..his dad’s response was… no ur not gonna be any engineer or nething.. ur juss gonna be a soccer player.. soccer is growing up in states.. n ur gonna be one of the player  who gets million….

1)      Are the kids a way of investment to parents?

2)      Why can’t (Esp. with Asian immigrant) kids have their own choice of career?

Well I dropped in my opinion.. have ur say.. cheers ye

YB, a great topic indeed!  I posted an original poem earlier on this and will do so again...It sums up my thoughts on the whole issue (but hey, I love my job though...In better words, I love the commodities and services my job helps me buy.  LOLs):

Molded: An Ode To Our Parents/Guardians (The Ones Who For Us Delve)

Ah, all our human lives spent being cast and molded to fit in

A plaster applied to an unfinished product camoflaging itself

Nothing so much that we ask for ourselves from within

But brought about solely by the ones who on our behalf delve

Society's sublime dreams and hopes for us rings all abound

Identity lost in making us aim for being a lowly 9 to 5 wage slave

A trait that has not a single vitue I could tell with one noun

But we do it willingly enamored of the ones who on our behalf delve

A life pursuing contentment for an elusive "happy" retirement time

Periods in universties for four years or more, school for twelve

Solely paths to dreams, conforming and bringing the free-spirit in line

All silently being witnessed by the ones who on our behalf delve

And when our life's work is done, in a phase we call "happily" retired

In retrospect, a hundred things you wished for but never into did dwelve

Millions you've accumulated; plain paper unable to buy all that transpired

Crying and in hate, you blame the ones who on your behalf did delve

Answer 1)
Considering kids as a parent's investments to reap personal benefits is wrong. IMO, every individual should strive to make their own mark and  become independent whether a parent or an offspring. A seven year old is too young to be talked into becoming a future millionaire. Instead, that particular parent should allow the kid to indulge in something he likes the most and can carve a career out of it. Because intense passion makes the hardest of tasks appear like fun no matter for how long or at what time of the day/night.
In the Nepali context, I would draw a line like this. If the parents have made heavy investments in the child's education/business even after 10+2, then yes, the child has an obligation to make up for that with payback, interest, and dividends. Everyone should get their scores (finance or money) straight.
Let me also throw this in. Parents should hand down ancestral fortune to the offspring unscathed if possible. In the mean time, each party should plan for their own retirement finances.

Answer 2)

That is sheer wrong parenting in the right land. 'Course.. goes without saying, there is no reason why kids should not get to follow their own passion.

Peace

I know we should all be allowed to chose our own destiny...But everything we wish for is not always true...I myself was very active in sports during childhood...May be i could be one of the stars but it didn't happen...Why you ask??? It's because there's no opportunity...yes there's family support but at one time you yourself will think about what you are gonna do in the future...Truly everybody wants to earn a lot of money and get a fruitful life..I didn't think my sports would give me what i wanted...I wanted sports but it didn't want me...That is why i had to chose a different career...Most of the parents want their children to read books and not play all the time...This happens because they want their children to be just like their friend's children...ram uncle ko chora ta 1st bhayo, babu pani padera 1st hunuparcha....everybody has to be number 1..that's what they expect all the time...I would say parents guide us for some while nevertheless taking care of yourself depends on you...
