source: http://news.xinhuanet.com/english/2008-11/30/content_10434619.htm Report: cases of school torture on rise in Nepal www.chinaview.cn 2008-11-30 18:46:04 KATHMANDU, Nov. 30 (Xinhua) -- The cases of punishment in the name of discipline in Nepali schools are on rise, said a report prepared by Save the Children Norway and Hatemalo Sanchar on Sunday. Hatemalo Sanchar, a private organization working on the behalf of the Nepali children unveiled the study report on Sunday in the Nepali capital Kathmandu. Students at most of the schools in Nepal have been reported getting both mental and physical tortures citing different causes including not doing homework, violating the discipline, lacking respect for teachers and conducting misdeeds. During a period of six months, 203 Nepali students suffered severe torture in the name of discipline, said the report. Similarly, during the study, the students were asked about the post-punishment feeling. Of them, 32 percent said it makes them sad. Likewise, 25 percent said they feel humiliation among the friends, 17 percent said they feel very sad and only 7 percent said that they realize their mistakes. When asked, the teachers said they give the punishment just to improve the behaviors of the students. Corporal punishment at home and school is common in Nepal, due to which less number of corporal punishment is reported.
