GRE general test is prerequisite not subject test. You can easily get fellowships if you have 1200+ in general test (1100+ for some state schools) but you won't even be accepted in many schools if you don't have general test scores and have subject test scores. Most schools won't even accept you for Phd program if they are not able to offer you any type of funding. complete your general test and don't worry about subject tests now unless you are applying to Ivy League or similar schools.

pixie : why she is uncertain with 1400 in GRE with 1400 she can apply to Purdue or ivy league or similar....instead of focusing on subject test. i would suggest that she focus on applying to shools. rather than lamenting on less than expected score in subject test concentrate on writing good personal letter and arrange for good recommendation letters . i had just attended purdue grad expo 2010 where representatives from lots of great schools including yale were there....most require 1300 on GRE. with 1400 she already is qualified for top universities including purdue, duke etc.. the problem is that she has now too less time to apply to those universities if she is planning for fall 2010. most universities deadline is jan 15... still got 1 month, if she can send the all the documents including GRE score before this date, she has a very good chance of getting into those schools..if she is planning for fall 2010 then apart from applying to above mentioned schools she should also apply to other schools where admission would be easier...just for backup purpose. the universities mentioned earlier are very hard to get in and if in case she is not accepted, she would just loose one academic year. So its always good to apply to other less competitive schools and even state schools...let me know how things goes....if need be feel free to contact me..good luck
