I have just reinvented Tara Devi and just finding out how great her old songs were. I always thought Aruna Lama was the Swor Samragyi of Nepal but after listening to some of TaraDevi songs and the words behind it i am reevualating my rankings on my list.

Gorkey,

Music and Culture: I do believe that the kings did do a good job on preserving our "maulikta". Our culture was definetly strong and unique. The team that Birendra put on Radio Nepal were definetly awesome. Narayan Gopal, NatiKaji, Aruna lama, Tara devi, Deepak Kharel, deepak Jangam and many others were great assets. keeping our "maulikta"  unique helped the kings to identify Nepal and Nepali different from India and Hindi.

Education: Mostly higher and quality education was not available to ordinary Nepali, it was almost impossible for regular folks to get higher education in Nepal or go abroad.

Peace: I would not really compare the SILENCE FROM FEAR that dictatorship provied as PEACE.

Social Security: You are right...people were definitely more scared of authorities than they are now.

National Pride: It was definitely higer than what it is now.

Economic Growth: I am no economist and i do not have numbers to compare the growth but it seems like people definetly are able to afford more things in last 15 years than during Birendra's time.

My leaders huh? If you want my opinions about the leaders, All leaders we have now are diseases, diseases caused by the man pari tantra, lazyness, ineffectiveness, natabaad, and feudalism that prospered since Prithivi Narayan's death.

Yes indeed, when ambar gurung and gopal yonjan came to nepal..
Nepali culture and music rocketed in such a way,,
beyond imagination!! Yes we have unique culture in the world but its slowly dying because of misuse !Specailly the influence and even political condition plays a big role in it...
We are slowly losing our identity !

It was King Mahendra's step to bring them to Neapl. Amber gurung, Gopal Yonjan, Aruna Lama, Lainsingh Bangdel, etc. were invited by king who later contributed mammothly in the upbringing of Nepalese music and art.

Yes,He called them to come nepal as he was proud of our culture and ..we can never find patriotic person like gopal yonjan in the history of nepal...Right when he came from darjeeling he started writing patriotic song spreading the nepalese beauty all over the country..Then he became mitjyu with narayan gopal which is the most important part in our cultural history...
Ambar gurung composed songs for aruna lama from the beginning like e kancha malai sun ko tara khasai deu na,hera na hera kancha ...pohor sal khusi phatda and many other evergreen songs!
naulakhe tara udaye of ambar gurung impressed mahendra so much and he called him back! And finally ambar gurung chosed nepal as his motherland which gave whole new sky to nepali music!
Mahendra organized many cultural programs till he was alive!Bachhu kailash was his music teacher and he sang many songs written by him..We have ofcourse the best talents in world..
With such less resources, quality and people yet we created a huge piller which is our biggest pride to be nepali..
But yes ,we can say we almost lost our identity

I started listening to Western music since 5th Grade. In school, people who listened to Nepali and Hindi songs were "pahkes" in our eyes.  The music marathon that started with Michael jackson's "Beat it" gradually developed into George Michaels > Guns n Roses > Metallicas > Megadeaths > Napalm Deaths > Led Zepplins > Pink Floyds > 80s Classics > Old Hindi songs > then to finally my own roots the Nepali. After 20 years of listening to music i have to say that " Aafnopan ma jati maulikta ra mithaas cha tyo aroo kehi ma pani chaina"

Budeshkaal le choyera ho ki, sangeet chinne sakti badhdai gayera ho aajkaal Purana (original) Nepali geet jasto mitho kehi lagdaina. Aafnu biha garda kheri pani Band baja dekhi DJ samma lai yeuta pani Non Nepali Geet bajauna diyana maile.

Sidster  really?during that time also there was english influence ,cant believe people donot listened to hindi songs..my story..
when i was in nepal i listened only hindi songs ..i dont even dont knew who was gopal yonjan, ambar gurung..everybody
i only heard narayan gopal sometimes...but didnot even knew songs except 3 or 4..but i never listened them..everybody in school said nepali songs sucks and in every program only hindi and enlglish were sang...i loved folk songs but only for few years then i always listened hindi everytime..and unfortunately in nepal radio play 70% of hindi then nepali old songs,at least folk songs are preserving our culture

But when i came to usa ,BY mistake once i clicked on narayan gopal's song and listened full song for first time in my life..."it was yo samjhane man chha" then i kept in my cell phone slowly started listening and i really felt myself..From then i slowly started knowing every legends day by day ,still i dont know many of them! Now i never listen hindi or english ..its not bad to listen but my soul donot let me  ...,.

Since i started listening narayan gopal songs,i not only knew the importance of our culture and country..
My whole life changed ,and i am a lot different i used to be !
It has been 1 year and 3 months i came here in usa...and it has been 6-7  months i have been listening nepali songs and knowing how beautiful our culture is...
during short period of time i have lot of stories about my music and how my life has changed

Chamatkar,

While in Nepal me and my buddies were just busy not associating ourselves with Nepali and Hindi songs listners. We thought we were much cooler by just listening to English Music. I came to US right after school as when i was trying to understand more about western English music. First few years in US i was too busy following the English bands and that thirst was fulfilled quite quickly. We drove 1000 miles following bands in college days. Then it started getting old, i was looking more into quality western in my early 20s, those days i used to listen to the classics like Led Zeppling and Pink Floyds.

In my 20s when i heard Nepali music in the Nepali cultural nights and such it started giving me better feelings. I started liking our Lok beats in the parties...thats when i started increasing the appetite for Nepali music and decrease the western music. I started listening to the music more than hearing it. If you know the difference between listening and hearing.

To be honest with you...i have heard lots of Hindi songs..but i have never really listened to any.

@ Sidster
I have the similar experience. When I was in high school I listened to mostly english songs, hindi songs, and nepali pop songs. I still remember few of songs I listened that time. Crossroads, bhim tuladhar, Suneel upreti, Classica etc were my fav nepali bands/ artists. Probabily, Wham was the first western band I Iistened to as my borthers used to listened to them. So were the Durand-durand, aha, abba, bee-gees. Gradually musical taste began to change and I started listenign to great bands like Nirvana (my I.Sc days), GNR, Scorpions, Metallica, Deep purple,   and all the greatest bands. But, further I started liking songs on socioeconomic-political issues rathar than love songs. So, I started liking Pink flyod, Boss (Bruce springsteen), Bob dylan, etc. At that time my brother used to sing Deep srestha, arun thapa and deepak kharel in his guitar. I teased him saying jhyaure geet. But, now I like nepalese golden oldie songs most. I like Narayan gopal, om bikram, deep srestha, Aruna lama, etc. Lolayeka timra sung by ghulam ali in Dipak Jungam's composition and King Mahendra's words is one I can listen to hundred times at one sitting.

Undoubtedly, the era of Dipak Jungam, Amber Gurung and Gopal yonjan, Narayan gopal, prem dhwoj is the most dazzling period of Neapli music. It is Shambhoojit baskota who is responsible to some extent to degrade quality of Nepalese music for cheap popularity.

I think that as you grow older you start looking for your own identity and you start appreciating your own things.

Yes indeed ,my birthday is march 20th..now one week left
Nepali culture and history and narayan gopal  and gopal yonjan  are people  who inspired me for my life...But i dont think there is any way that we can get back our identity as proud nepali..we are just living in shadow of india !
All we can do is just remember the past,be happy ..even though we were not there during that time

Very well said chamatkar. If Nepal has anything worth being proud of, it's just our past.

 Gorkhecow boy..
we have natural resources ,forest, water but they are completely misused and will slowly disappear! we have some special animals that will alsoo disappear in few years!
our simana is also decreasing day by day because of indian domination!
Our leaders care nothing! They are like animals..
Mounteverest is there,gautam buddha...

at least our folk songs are most unique in world..only found in our nepal
that is keeping our identity in some way...we can feel  our past, how beautiful were we !
Now more people from india coming with passports ,our population is increasing,..our mother language is also now going down..Everything possible is degrading..
I wish i was born during the past and died so that  i wouldnot feel myself as a unlucky nepali..i have no one to respect and look..there is no more prithivi narayan shah, no more gopal yonjan and no more narayan gopal...there are no more balabhadra kunwar and bhakti thapa..there is no beautiful kalopani, nalapani ,naini tal everything..

all we can do is imagine as if we are living in past..thats the only way to be proud as nepali!ma ek abhagi nepali

Chamatkar
Thanks dude for beautifully penned down post. Whenever I contemplate about present political scenario of nepal, it makes me feel humiliated. Because of pussilanimously basttttarrrds in the politics we are not being able to walk tall.

I, too, love our splendid history.

Gorkhali spirit never dies !!!!

nalapani u know  that how british are treating  gurkhas..
our brave ancestor nepalese who fought for british are living in poverty, with no food ,money..education for children.they are not getting health care! its also our gov fault..they donot have mouth to speak in good things
We know how unlucky we are..
and in britan our soldiers get  1/4  sallary compared to their soldiers and they should give up part of their life..which is really sad !
i cant believe we are unlucky in everything
