Rawal dies, and becomes a one-day news item, and that's it.

If Rawal had been a journalist, even a minor one, then, everyone from Reporters
Sans Frontiers to various factions of so-called 'Peace Journalism' brigade (the latest cottage industry in Nepal), and columnists of every stripe in Nepal would have
jumped up and down by now -- demanding an apology from the Maoists.

[And the Maoists, after a day or two of silence, would have issued their boilerplate apology, only to move on to kill their next target! And so it would go!]

Vice President of Maoist Victims? Association shot dead

KATHMANDU, Jan 3 - Suspected Maoists have shot dead the Vice President of Maoist Victims? Association (MVA) at a busy market area of Kathmandu Monday evening.
Although the exact location of the shooting still remains unclear, local people in Bangemudha are reported to have rushed Vice President of the MVA Jaya Bahadur Rawal to hospital after they found him struggling in pain.

Rawal was shot twice from close range and died while on his way to hospital.

Other details are not yet clear.

He is the second person of the MVA to be killed.
Last year, President of MVA Ganesh Chiluwal was also killed by the Maoists in Kathmandu.

The MVA has been launching campaigns against the Maoist atrocities. (rk)

Indeed, both Maoists and Govt. are easily getting away with their murders. The Govt. is simply useless, which does not have guts to even support those people who are going against Maoists.

The maoists will go on like this for next 10 years. Then that will be the End. Their rebellion will be out of phase after 20 years of struggle, and will be proved useless. Because in 20 years time period, the world will have moved quite a bit distance. And how can this Maobadi andolan can be rationalized? 20 years period will bring a new generation, which will simply dump thier revolution.

Ashu is rightt, dammn if he had been a journalist, there wud have been a outrage from their community. Dammmmn. our nation.

My suggestion to REMAINING members of the Maoist Victim Association:

- Try to do some journalism or human rights activism on the side.
- Don't worry about the quality of your journalism or activism.
- As the NIKE slogan goes, "Just do it"
- Just pay some money and get your press credentials from Suchana Mantralaya (the credentials are very easy to get)
- And register yourself as a member of the Fourth Estate in Nepal.

This way, even if you do get killed even in a busy bazaar area, at least you'll be
publicly mourned. And from Suman Pradhan to Khagendra Sangraula, columnists
will then write your obituaries.

while Nepal's peaceniks busy themselves to hold monthly candle-lit vigils and run various traffic-stopping rallies for some inscrutable "shanti, shanti and nothing but shanti", deaths like yours, the real victims of the ongoing violence, will remain anonymous and will amount to nothing more than mere statistics.
