Exam fraud in TN's engineering colleges: Fraud in India Engineering Degree
CHENNAI: An examination fraud involving two dozen engineering students writing their papers and later substituting answer sheets by bribing officials has left Tamil Nadu's premier Anna University red in the face.
The scam, which has already led to half a dozen students being taken into custody and 17 others under investigation, was unearthed after an anonymous email to the vice-chancellor and the controller of examination on May 5.
Police said on Sunday that bribes up to Rs.800,000 had been paid in the fraud, which included students of the prestigious SRM Engineering College, the Valliammal Engineering College and the Crescent Engineering College.
The email alert said students who were writing semester exams were later substituting the answer sheets by paying temporary varsity officials in the examination department.
"As soon as we received the mail, I asked the controller of examination to conduct random checks of the answer sheets. All the 10 zones of the university where exams are on are being watched. We found that the sheets were tampered with by seven boys," said Vice-Chancellor E. Balagurusamy.
The modus operandi, said officials, was simple. The boys wrote the exams. They then went home and rewrote the answers on blank examination papers provided to them by insiders who were temporary employees of the examination department.
The new answer sheets were then substituted for the actual answer sheets.
Police has recovered 100 fresh answering sheets from the people involved. On Sunday, police also arrested three agents and intermediaries between the examination staff and the students.
There are nearly 300 engineering colleges and technical institutions under the Anna University in Chennai, said to be Asia's biggest technical university.
