I was noticing that quite a few people on sajha were looking at different trends in information technology. From what I see:
SAS is hot. But SAS in healthcare is hotter. Trends in Health Information Technology is pretty good. This is both in terms of electronic health records as well as health informatics. People with statistics background can combine their knowledge with epidimiology into health informatics.
.NET is not going out of the market anytime soon. But you have to combine knowledge of .NET with ORM solutions like nhibernate. It is becoming increasingly challenging into this market because companies want people who are well versed in both client-side as well as server-side technologies and everything in between. Best to try to get through this door from the Quality Assurance side.
Mobile application programming is still a hot market. Making applications for iphone, blackberry and other smart phones is still an emerging market. Yesterday's .coms are today's mobile applications. This takes creativity, ingenuity and ability to hop and stay on top. Most importantly, not only do you need programming skills, but you need to understand what the clients really want and market it.
ERP, CRM solutions combined with rigorous business intelligence and datamining. Again, people with statistics background, like I see many people mention in sajha, would do well to look into this market.
